  • Read the decree for accuracy
  • Ask the attorney if the applicant has any questions
  • File an appeal immediately if the applicant is not happy with the judge's decision after a trial
  • Change the will
  • Change beneficiaries on the applicant's insurance policies
  • Update emergency contacts for his/her child's school
  • Change the power of attorney
  • Put savings and checking accounts in the applicant's name only

  • Bring the case back to court if the applicant needs to change spousal or child support later

  • Showing proof of divorce without revealing the details of the applicant's divorce

  • Getting a passport, unless his/her name change is not on the certificate
  • Inheritance purposes, to show the applicant is single
  • Getting married
  • Anywhere the applicant needs to show proof of divorce

OthersEdit

A divorce certificate is a completely different document from a divorce decree. A certificate is not prepared by a court. Instead, the applicant state's health department or bureau of vital statistics issues the certificate. This is usually the same place where the applicant gets the birth certificate.
Unlike a lengthy divorce decree, a divorce certificate is a simple document that shows:

  • The applicants are divorced
  • The names of both former spouses
  • The date of the divorce
  • The place of the divorce
