El Salvador - Obtain Birth Certificate

The BIRTH CERTIFICATE is the document that proves the identity of the new-born, their family membership and allows obtaining the first National Identity Document.
Apply in person
- Visit the Family Registry (Registro del Estado Familiar) of the municipality where the birth took place. You should have the required documents when visiting the registry office.
- Once in the office request for the birth certificate (Partida de Nacimiento) verbally and submit your required documents to the attending officer.
- The attending officer will inspect your document to validate the information you have provided.
- Then the officer will transfer your request to the Head of the Family State Registry (Jefe del Registro del Estado Familiar) or a delegate to issue your certificate.
- Upon successful submission of your request, you will be issued with your certificate.
- Note: in other municipalities, there are service charge for the application while in others the application for the process is free.
Apply though a Proxy
- If the birth certificate was registered, you can authorize a third party to make the application for you at the family registry office in municipality where the registration took place.
Application from abroad
- If you are not in El Salvador, you can either send a representative to make an application at the registry office or you can visit the nearest El Salvador embassy to make your application personally.

- Name of the parents of the Enrollee.

InstructionsEdit
If the document was never registered or was lost by the municipality, you must go through registration called "a notary process called subsidiary civil state (estado civil subsidiario)" . This process requires you the applicant to send a special letter of authorization (poder especial) to conduct the process in El Salvador, and provide documents that can prove the date of birth, and witnesses that can testify to the date and place of birth. The process takes approximately 2 months.

REGISTRATION TIME AND FINE
Art. 16, 28.- Transitory Law of the Registry of the Family Status and of the Patrimonial Regimes of Matimony
- The registration may be made within 90 working days following the date of birth.
- After 90 working days to a birth and up to 7 years, you can register after paying a fine of $ 2.85 and before registering the birth the registrar will request an opinion from the Attorney General's Office.
- After 7 years to a birth that has not been registered, you can only register by Notarial or Judicial action as the case may be.
Other uses of the Document/CertificateEdit
A Birth Certificate states the name and sex of a person, it also indicates the time and place of birth, it is issued after you have registered the birth of a child. A copy of the birth certificate is often needed when you apply for a passport, a driver license or a marriage license.
