Procedure

• All passengers have the right to bring in foreign money, stipulated to be stated in the official declaration if exceeding ten thousand dollars or its equivalent in other foreign currencies;and have the right, on departure, to take out foreign money stipulated not exceeding ten thousand dollars or its equivalent in other foreign currencies.

• On departure, non-Egyptians are allowed to keep the remaining sums of the amounts declared before if exceeding ten thousand dollars or its equivalent in other foreign currencies.
• Passengers arriving or departing from Egypt could have Egyptian money equivalent to five thousand Egyptian pounds approximately.
• It is strictly forbidden to bringing in or taking out Egyptian or foreign currency through airmail or mail parcels

5,000 Egyptian pounds is the maximum amount of local currency you are allowed to bring in or take out of Egypt.

There is no limit to the amount of hard currency that you may bring in, but sums that exceed USD 10,000 should be declared on arrival. Certain valuables like electrical equipment, video cameras etc must be declared on arrival.

Satellite phones and radio communications equipment brought into Egypt without prior clearance from the Ministry of Telecommunications are likely to be confiscated.

Electrical items noted in passports on entry to Egypt must be produced on exit from the country. Failure to do so will result in payment of high rates of customs duty. Contact the Egyptian embassy in your country of residence for further information on customs requirements.

Instructions

It is strictly forbidden to bringing in or taking out Egyptian or foreign currency through airmail or mail parcels.

Required Information

• Technical standard/health certificate
• Transit documents

(1) Attach a copy of the bill.

(2) Form shall be in two copies. The bank shall keep a copy and the other copy shall be delivered to the exporter to submit to the customs as a clearance document.

(3) This form shall be used as a clearance document as long as it is complete and sealed by the bank.

(4) The value may be transferred to the exporter through any of the banks operating in Egypt

Provided that the bank that issued the form shall be notified with such transfer. The discount or waiver by the exporter on the value mentioned in the form, shall be taken into account provided that the importer have to submit supportive documents.

Need for the Document

All passengers have the right to bring in foreign money, stipulated to be stated in the official declaration if exceeding ten thousand dollars or its equivalent in other foreign currencies as stipulate under provisions of Law no. 88/2013 in Egypt. The importing and exporting of local money is restricted to 100 Egyptian pounds for non-residents. Foreign currency importation is not limited, while exportation of foreign currency is allowed up to the amount declared upon arrival.

The currency in Egypt is the Egyptian pound (EGP). The Egyptian Pound is divided into 100 piastres. Coins, which are not used often, are available in 5, 10, 20 , 50 piasters and 1 pound, while banknotes come in 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 pounds

Travellers can exchange money on arrival at Cairo International Airport, where there is a bank, several ATMs and a 24-hour bureaux de change.

All large towns in Egypt provide bank branches, most with currency exchange services. ATMs are plentiful, especially in the capital of Cairo, and accept a variety of credit cards.

Most shopping areas and business districts also provide cash machines. Credit cards are accepted in most large establishments.
