Apply In-Person:

  1. To apply for ordinary resident permit, the applicant first must approach the local embassy and submit their passport.
  2. The applicant’s passport must meet the following requirements:
    • The passport must have at least six (6) months validity remaining before expiration and has at least one complete blank visa page for the visa stamp.
    • Note: The following passport page 22, 23, and 24 are not visa pages and are not acceptable in Egypt for purpose of Visa.
  3. Then the applicant must fill out the resident permit application form.
  4. The applicant must attach a support Letter from their home country address to "Consulate of Egypt" explaining the purpose of the trip, guaranteeing financial support for you while in Egypt.
  5. The letter should explain what business the applicant plan to be undertaking in Egypt. This is very important because it will show that you financially stable to begin a viable business in Egypt. After completing fill-out visa form the applicant can sign and submit with all the attachment documents.

EligibilityEdit

Non Egyptians are granted a temporary residence permit that is renewable if they fall into the following categories

  • Non Egyptian husbands of Egyptians
  • Minor children have the right to special or ordinary residence permits and they fall in the same category as their fathers
  • Adult children whose father has the right to have a special, ordinary, or three years residence permits, under the conditions that they have a proved source of income
  • The non Egyptian citizens that officially employed by governmental or public institutes, public sector companies, and public business companies
  • Palestinian citizens officially employed by the Department for the Governor General of Gaza and employees who retired from the same institute
  • Palestinian citizens who have official travel documents issued only by the Egyptian authorities on the condition that they have spent a period of 10 years as residents of Egypt
  • Non Egyptians receiving pensions from a national authority on monthly basis
  • Non Egyptians who owns homes for elderly and disabled
  • Refugees for political reasons
  • Refugees registered at the UN Higher Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).
  • Spouses of non Egyptians who have the right for special or ordinary residence permit
  • Egyptian spouses who left their original nationality after getting married to non Egyptians
  • Children and spouses of non Egyptians that are exempted from resident permissions
  • Non Egyptians who have given up their rights for special or ordinary residence permits for any reasons
  • Non Egyptians who are officially employed by the Swiss Institute for Architectural and Archeological Research in Egypt
  • Non Egyptian who have the right to obtain 3 years residence permission according to any international conventions or agreements
  • Any person who has gained the consent of the ministry of interior for a 3 years residence permit
  • Children and spouses of a non Egyptians who have the right to obtain 3 years resident permit for any of the mentioned above reasons


Five-Year Residence permissionNon Egyptians are granted a temporary residence permit for five years that is renewable if they fall into the following categories

  • Foreigners investing money in Egypt
  • Egyptians and their minor children who have waived their nationality of origin due to obtain a foreign citizenship
  • Children
    • A- of an Egyptian mother
    • B- of a father who has obtained an Egyptian nationality
    • C- Adult children whose mother has the right for special or ordinary resident permit for five years in the case of the death of the father
  • Non Egyptians who are 60 year old or more and has been living in Egypt for 10 years or more, under the condition that they have a source of income
  • Non Egyptians who have the right to obtain a five years resident permit according to international convections and agreements
  • Widows and spouse who were of Egyptians
  • Spouses of non Egyptians who have the right to obtain an ordinary resident permit
  • The children and spouses of non Egyptians who have the right to obtain a resident permit for five years under any of the previously mentioned cases

Need for the DocumentEdit

Residence permit in Egypt for Foreign Nationals is categorized in two parts one is

  • Temporary resident Permit granted for a period not exceeding 14 days
  • ordinary Resident Permit is granted to foreigner for 3years to 10 years. it is also categorized in two parts
A. Special Residence permit for 10 years
B. Temporary Resident Permit under permanent resident permit for 3 years


Egypt grants legitimate foreign nationals the right for temporary residence in the country. There are two main cases of resident permits in Egypt:

  • Special Residence: is usually granted for a period of 10 years, renewable, and granted to those born in Egypt prior to 26/5/1952 or those having resided in the country for the 20 years preceding 26/5/1952, and whose stay has been uninterrupted; it is also granted to their wives and minor children.
  • Visitors entering Egypt can be exempted from visa and granted a free residence permit for fourteen days to visit the area of their choice.
  • Those in possession of a residence permit in Egypt are not required to obtain an Egyptian visa (entry visa) if they leave the country and return to it within the validity of their residence permit or within six months, whichever period is less.
  • Entry visa are required of any visitors arriving in Egypt for purposes such as work, and study that are not related to tourism. This visa is also necessary for the completion of the residence procedure in Egypt.
