Denmark - Register a Marriage

To apply for marriage in the Municipality offices you must fill in an application with the personal data of you and your future spouse.

When you have filled in the notice of marriage you must forward it to the Municipality offices along with the relevant documents listed below.

The form is to be submitted/sent to the local authority of the district where you live. If you live in two different districts, you are free to choose which of the two is to process your case.

If you do not reside in Denmark, submit/send the form to the local authority where one of you is staying (the district in which you are to be married). At the same time, please pay a fee of DKK 500 for the local authoritys processing of your case.

Furthermore you must send the examination fee receipt.

A non-resident wishing to get married in Denmark is required to contact the relevant municipality (Kommune) beforehand. In some cases they may be able to send the relevant documentation, either by e-mail or by post. In Copenhagen they must visit the relevant office in person. If all the correct documentation is sent, an appointment for the marriage to take place can be made.

Required DocumentsEdit

The Notice of Marriage 2014 - please print out, fill in, date and sign. If you have a problem downloading then try saving the file and then opening it. Otherwise well email you a copy.
Passport or national ID - (and Schengen visa if applicable), or military ID and leave form.
Birth certificate - if not already in English, German or Danish, then translated into one of these by an authorised translator.
Civil status certificate also called letter of non-impediment, confirming your marital status as single, divorced or widowed.
Final divorce decree or death certificate - if either of you is divorced or widowed then the original certificate of divorce or death certificate (if not already in English, German or Danish, then translated into one of these) and legalised if applicable.

EligibilityEdit

Persons under the age of 18 may not contract marriage without permission from the Marriage Office.

Persons who are applying for asylum cannot get married in Denmark.

Non-residents pay a fee of DKK 500.00.

Currently you can expect 5 to 6 weeks response time from the time you fill out the notice of marriage

InstructionsEdit

If you and your fianc want to get married, you must complete the Notice of marriage. Also you must submit/present the documents mentioned in this form. Remember to sign the form and to specify the date.

The local authority needs the information in the form and the documents enclosed to examine whether you fulfill the requirements for marrying each other. Insufficient or wrong information may lead to a postponement of the marriage case and to you not being married at the time planned.

If both you and your future spouse hold a Danish CPR number you have to fill in the self-service notice of marriage using the NemID.

Need for the DocumentEdit

It is normally required for the couple getting married to personally visit the Marriage Office in the municipality with all the original documents and the fee at least three days before the marriage is due to take place. This allows time for the processing of the documents. At least a two-week stay in Denmark is recommended if the couple does not live in Denmark.

Information which might helpEdit

The declaration must be made and signed personally by each party before the marriage can take place. One party cannot sign for the other party even if a power of attorney exists.

If you make a false declaration, you are punishable pursuant to s. 163 of the Danish Penal Code.

The declaration must be dated at the same time as the signature. The notice of marriage must be submitted to the local authority not later than four weeks after the date of signing.

OthersEdit

Some churches and register offices may require additional documents or may require that you reside in their municipality (kommune) for a period of time before the marriage may be performed. Please contact the church office or the register office in the city or town where you wish to be married to confirm their requirements.

Divorce decrees and Death certificates issued in countries outside the European Union (with exception of the USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, a.o.) must be presented in the original with a Legalization/Apostille. The complete Legalization must also be translated and handed in.
