Procedure

Having a NemID will allow you to log-in on the internet securely. NemID consists of a user ID, a password and a code card containing codes (one-time passwords). When you log on, you first enter your user ID and password and then a code from your code card.

With a NemID you can do online banking, find out information from the public authorities or engage with one of the many businesses that use NemID. Using a NemID is easy because you only use the same user ID and password and code everywhere. Whether you’re doing your online banking or you need to view your tax file, log in will be exactly the same.

If you are in Denmark

1. To request for a NemID in person you will need to apply personally by going to a Citizen Service Center. Find nearest citizen service center in your area
2. You will need to present a valid identification:
   1. You may present any of these valid (not expired) photo identification:
      1. National driver’s license issued in an EU/EEA Member State, Greenland or the Faroe Islands
      2. Passport issued by a public authority in your home country
      3. Military ID card (from Denmark)
      4. NATO passport
      5. Police ID card (from Denmark)
      6. Residence permit with photo issued in Denmark
      7. Danish banks’ ID card
      8. National ID card with photo issued by a public authority in your home country and which can be used as a travel document in Schengen states.
      9. Note: If your CPR-number does not appear on the chosen picture identification, it is required that you bring identification where your CPR-number appears.
   2. If you do not have any identity card with photo in it, you must bring two other types of ID, one of which must hold your CPR number: You can identify yourself with a combination of at least two of the below mentioned types of identification:
      1. Person-, birth- or name certificate
      2. Health insurance card or certificate of residential address
      3. Latest annual statement or preliminary income statement from SKAT (Danish Tax and Customs Administration)
      4. Documentation of receipt of public benefits (dating back no further than three months).
      5. Note: at least one of the ID cards must be your health insurance card, certificate of residential address, or birth or name certificate.
3. Your CPR number must indicated on the identity papers you are presenting and you will need to answer 2-4 check questions correctly proving your identity or bring an attesting witness, who can give evidence to your identity. The check questions are based on information in the central national register (CPR). If the central national register only contain limited information about you, check questions will not be applicable. In such cases you will need to bring an attesting witness.
   If you are a foreigner or if you have only been in Denmark for a short while, you should bring an attesting witness to ensure that you can get a NemID. An attesting witness must be at least 18 years old, have a CPR number and must present valid photo identification, and sign a solemn declaration under penalty of law.
4. If it is not possible for you to answer the check questions or bring an attesting witness, you may have the NemID code card sent to your home address, if provided that's the address is registered in the Central National Register (CPR).
   The last option is - among other special cases - not possible for citizens, who have requested non-disclosure of name and address or citizens living abroad.
5. Your NemID code card and the temporary activation password will be handed out to you immediately.

Danes living abroad

1. If you are living abroad. You can request for a NemID online if you have a valid Danish driving licence or Danish passport. You will be the one to choose at which Embassy or consulate you would like to pick up the NemID activation password.
2. Apply online:
   1. Order NemID with a Danish driving licence or a Danish passport (the form is in Danish)- Form
   2. Order NemID for Danish citizens living abroad - requires a Danish passport (the form is in Danish)- Form
   3. Order NemID for blind and visually impaired - requires a Danish driving license or a Danish passport (the form is in Danish)- Form
3. Your NemID code card will be sent to your address in the country you live in.
4. When you pick up your activation password at a Danish representation you must bring the document you used when you ordered your NemID online, your Danish driving licence or Danish passport.
5. If you decided to pick up the activation password at a representation in a foreign country, you must be aware that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will charge a fee (185 kr. in 2016).
6. If you have ordered a NemID online, you can also choose to pick up the activation password at a Danish citizen service centre.

Note: If you have change your address in a foreign country after ordering NemID, you must immediately change the address in the NemID self-service. Hereby NemID can send you new NemID code cards.

Danish representation abroad

Eligibility

You can apply for a NemID if you:

• Have a Danish CPR number
• Have reached the age of 15
• Are able to meet the ID requirements.

No need for you to be a Danish citizen to request NemID. You can obtain NemID if you have a Danish residence permit or study in Denmark.

If you are under the age of 15 or do not have a Danish CPR number, you can only obtain NemID for online banking, if your bank offers this service.

Need for the Document

Once you have a NemID, you can use it on most computers with an Internet connection. It is very easy use, you just need to remember only three things: Your user ID, password and code card.

You will be the one to choose your own user ID and password – which you must commit to memory – and the code card is a little piece of card about the size of a credit card which you need to look after carefully. You can also take NemID with you and use it on other computers.

NemID protects you against burglars and hackers.
