Cyprus - Obtain a Police Clearance Certificate (Good Character Certificate)

A "Certificate of Good Character" is a police certificate that serves whether or not any criminal conviction is held against an individual.

A police certificate is an official document issued by police or government agency of a country to enumerate any criminal records that the applicant may or may not have. Criminal records may include arrest, conviction, and possibly criminal proceedings.


Note: all applicants will need a letter from the Department advising that a Police Clearance Certificate is required from the Republic of Cyprus Police authorities.

Non-residents: Apply by post to Police Headquarters in Nicosia, Cyprus or at a Republic of Cyprus overseas mission.

  • You need to provide a police certificate when applying for permanent residence.

Local Requests

  • Cypriot nationals and permanent residents may apply for a police certificate by presenting a birth certificate, identity card or passport and two passport-size photographs (one must be certified) as well as the applicable fees at the local police station.

Every Application for the Issuance of Clear Criminal Record must be accompanied by:

  • An official receipt for the payment of the amount of €20,00. a) The payment could be made in cash at any Divisional Police Headquarters or at any Embassy or Consulate of the Republic of Cyprus. (If payment is being made in $US, please call the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Washington D.C., in order to verify that the current exchange rate is in accordance with the amount in Euro (€). If paying through the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus, please include a self addressed stamped envelope so that the receipt can be mailed back to you.
    • By Remittance to the Central Bank of Cyprus in the name of the Chief of Cyprus Police* SWIFT CODE: CBCYCY2NACC, or Government General Account, Account No.: CY16001000010000000006001010 *These deposits apply to payment by Euro (€) only.
  • Copy of Identity Card /Current Passport and Passport Held While Living in Cyprus / Alien Book /Pink Slip / Yellow Slip or other proof of having resided in Cyprus for an extended period of time.

Required Documents

Citizens to provide
  • application form
  • passport number and place of issue
  • Republic of Cyprus ID card number
  • current and permanent address, reason for request
  • two current passport size photos which have been certified by an authorised person.
Non-citizens to provide
  • the documents listed above for ‘Citizens’, and
  • a copy of your passport (and, if possible, the passport you held while living in Cyprus)
  • a copy of your permit of stay in Cyprus, passport number and place of issue as well as the
  • A.R.C number of the ‘Alien Book’’ or
  • the ‘Temporary Residence’ slip or
  • ‘M.P’ number stamped in the passport.


Fee: 17.09 Euros. However, you will need to confirm this with the Republic of Cyprus Police Authorities. The fee can be paid at a Cyprus Embassy, which issues receipt F18, or by sending a cheque (the payee is the Chief of Police), or bank wire (credit) transfer to:

  • The Central Bank of Cyprus (the beneficiary is the Chief of Police)
  • Government General Account, account number CY 16001000010000000006001010

You will need to pay in Euros and include the receipt for the fee with your application form.

Criminal Record Office (C.R.O.)

Besides other duties, the Criminal Record Office issues, on behalf of the Chief of Police:

  • Police clearance certificates
  • criminal record certificates


  • citizens of the Republic of Cyprus
  • aliens residing legally in the Republic of Cyprus for at least six months
  • companies, corporations, associations, societies or any other alliance of persons of legal entity

The application should be accompanied by the following:

  • Receipt of payment (F107A) for the sum of €`17.9 issued by the Accounts Department at Divisional Police Headquarters or by the Crime Registry of Department C at Police Headquarters
  • Identity Card or Passport – in the case of Cypriot citizens
  • In the case of companies, a registration certificate
  • A residence permit (pink slip), aliens book and passport, if the applicant is an alien

Application forms may be obtained from any Police Station or the Police Website – (Citizens Rights Charter)


  • The applicant can obtain the certificate from the Crime Registry by going there in person by giving written authorization to another person.
  • The Accounts Offices of Divisional Police Headquarters issue certificates of clearance to Cypriot Citizens only.

Other uses of the Document/Certificate

A police clearance certificate is a copy of your criminal record or a declaration of the absence of any criminal record. Police clearance certificates are different in each country and territory and may be called police certificates, good conduct certificates, judicial record extracts, pcc, etc. They are issued by police authorities or government departments and used by Citizenship and Immigration to prevent individuals who possess a risk to Country's security from entering the country.

The application for a Certificate of Character or Police Clearance should be submitted directly by the applicant to the Chief of Police in Nicosia, Cyprus.

The applicant, however, should complete the application in the presence of the Consul of the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Dublin as the Consul has to witness the signature of the applicant.

The application that the applicant will send to the Chief of Police in Nicosia, Cyprus, should be accompanied by the following documents / materials:

  • A copy of the pages of the passport that the applicant used when he / she resided in Cyprus.
  • A copy of the applicant’s work permit and / or residence permit for the period that the applicant has resided in Cyprus and for which he / she is applying for Certificate of Character.
  • An Application Fee of €17.08. The fee can be sent in the form of cash or in the form of CHEQUE payable to the CHIEF OF POLICE. Applicants who send CHEQUES should ensure that the CHEQUES can be deposited in accounts in Cyprus.
  • Applicants are also advised to submit along with the rest of their documents / materials a copy of their Birth Certificate.
  • A short letter addressed to the Chief of Police of the Republic of Cyprus explaining the reason for the application.

Applicants should note that the issued certificate is valid for two months after the date of issuance.

Certificates of Character on completion will not be given to agents or any other person but will be sent directly to the applicant by mail (post) or given personally to the applicant. Therefore, applicants should make sure to enclose with the rest of their documents / materials their full name and address in Ireland. It is recommended that the applicant sends with the application and the rest of the documents / materials a self-addressed envelope for quick and accurate delivery.
