Procedure

1. To renew your identity card go to the Consulate of your jurisdiction and fill in the application form.
2. Submit your application along with all the required documents.
3. Once you fill out the papers, your request is sent to the Civil Registry of Costa Rica for processing.

Required Documents

• Identity card expired
• Photocopy of the identity card on both sides
• Copy of your birth certificate
• 2 passport size photographs of the same background in light blue without identification of the carrier and not the negative

If your identity card expired in 1995 or at an earlier date, you also need to present the following:

• Two witnesses of Costa Rican nationality
• Valid identity card of witnesses
• Copy of the identity card of the witnesses on both sides
• Affidavit of witnesses, which will be signed before the Consul

Eligibility

Every Costa Rican citizen over 18 must hold a valid identity card.

Processing Time

The proceedings before the Consulate can last about an hour. The identity card may take up to three months to be sent back to the Consulate of your jurisdiction in the United States.

The delivery of an identity card to the person concerned, by virtue of Article 92 of the Organic Law of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal and Civil Registry must be made in person, ie can not be delivered to a third party.
