Procedure

1. Gather all documents listed under 'Required Documents' section.
2. Submit your documents to Departamento de Acreditacin de Conductores de la Direccin General de Educacin Vial (COSEVI, la Uruca). Applications are accepted between 8 to 11am.
3. Office locations are displayed under section "Office Location and Contacts".
4. Pay all applicable fees.
5. Take and pass all the required tests.

• Valid identification
• Passport or any document that can prove you are staying in Costa Rica legally, example: certificate of residence
• Your current foreign driver's license (must be valid)
• Medical certificate

Note: Submit 2 copies of each required documents

Eligibility

B1, B2, B3, B4, A1, A2, A3, D1, D2, D3 E1, E2

• At least 18 years old (see requirement for minors)
• Able to present valid identification and medical certificate
• Attended approved basic driving course

A-1 License for minors

• Able to present valid identification and medical certificate
• Paid insurance policy

Fees

Need for the Document

A foreigner in Costa Rica may drive the same type of vehicle permitted under his/her current foreign license for a period of three months (counted from the date of your last entry into the national territory) without having the need to apply for a Costa Rican driver's license. But if you are planning to drive in the country for a period longer than three months, then it will be better if you will apply for a standard license.
