Procedure

Its a temporary driver licence intended to get you from our office to the Police Station to obtain the photo driver licence. These are issued for both cars and scooters. The cost is $2 and is limited to only one issue per person.

1. If you don't hold a current motor cycle license you will need to sit a skills test at the office.
2. The cost for the skills test is $5.
3. Once you pass the skills test you will be issued with a temporary license, this is valid until 12 noon the next day and you will need to visit the Police Headquarters in town to obtain your Cook Islands photo licence which will cost you $20.
4. If you fail the skills test you will still be required to pay the 1 day hire plus the skills test fee.
5. Temporary driver license can be obtained from the hire company where you plan to hire your Car or Motor bike.

Required Documents

1. Your driver licesne from home country (if you had one). If your home country driver license is not in Enlgish, you would have to provide a translated driver license.

Instructions

• Visitors over 16 can drive in the Cook Islands on their current and full overseas license for up to six months, unless the license expires, is revoked, suspended or disqualified in that time
• The standard left hand rule applies to driving in the Cook Islands. And the maximum speed limit in the main township is 30 km/h and in the villages is 40km/h without a helmet. You must wear a helmet when driving in zones above 40km/h, specifically in the 50km/h speed limit in the less populated areas. It is essential to have a current Drivers Licence. Visitors from Australia, New Zealand, US, Canada, UK and the EU can now drive in the Cook Islands for up to six months using their overseas license.
• Visitors will be allowed to drive only the class of motor vehicle they are entitled to drive in their home country. If visitors hold an overseas driving license for a car only, the license holder will only be permitted to drive a car in the Cook Islands.
