Procedure

Application

• Applicant who meets the requirements applies at Motor Vehicle Administration and receives notice of acceptance by submitting the following:
  • Original and photo copy of identification document
  • Original Health examination certificate issued by hospital of county level and above. Applicants 61 years of age or above apply for driving license for small-size vehicle and people with bad left lower limb apply for small-size vehicle with auto transmission must submit health certificate issued by the hospitals appointed by municipal bureau of medical care.
  • 8 1-inch color photos with white background
• First time applicants may apply to drive the following types of vehicles: buses, large freight vehicles, small-size vehicles, small-size vehicles with auto transmission, low speed freight vehicles, three-wheel vehicles, three-wheel motorcycles, two-wheel motorcycles, light motorcycles, trolleys and tramcar

Training and testing

• After the applicant gets notice of acceptance from the Motor Vehicle Administration, he/she should go to Sheng Hua driving school or Shou Feng Driver Training Center(both for motor vehicle only) or Lao Shan Driving School (for motorcycle drivers only) for training on road traffic safety laws and regulations and related knowledge (this training will later be referred to as 'Course 1'). For those applicants who have completed the required training, Motor Vehicle Administration will give the Course 1 test within 30 days from the date in which the applicant makes an appointment. Three days after passing the Course 1 test the applicant will receive the 'Driving Test Permit'.
• 'Driving Test Permit' is valid for two years after issuance. While the permit is valid, the applicant should go to Sheng Hua driving school, Shou Feng driver training center or Lao Shan driving school (for motorcycle drivers only) to take driving training. For those applicants who have completed the required training, Motor Vehicle Administration will give the applicant a training-field driving test (later referred to as 'Course 2') and a road driving test (later referred to as 'Course 3').

• Reserving an appointment for the tests
  • 10 days after receiving the 'Driving Test Permit', applicants for small-size vehicles, small-size vehicles with auto transmission, low speed freight vehicles, three-wheel vehicles, three-wheel motorcycles, two-wheel motorcycles, light motorcycles, trolleys and tramcar can make reservation for test of 'Course 2'.
  • 20 days after receiving the 'Driving Test Permit', applicants for buses and large-size freight vehicles can make reservation for test of 'Course 2'.
  • 20 days after receiving the 'Driving Test Permit', applicants for small-size vehicles, small-size vehicles with auto transmission, low speed freight vehicles, three-wheel vehicles, three-wheel motorcycles, two-wheel motorcycles, light motorcycles, trolleys and tramcar can make reservation for test of 'Course 3'.
  • 30 days after receiving the 'Driving Test Permit', applicants for small-size vehicles, small-size vehicles with auto transmission can make reservation for test of 'Course 3'.
  • 40 days after receiving the 'Driving Test Permit', applicants for large-size freight vehicle can make reservation for test of 'Course 3'.
  • 60 days after receiving the 'Driving Test Permit', applicants for buses can make reservation for test of 'Course 3'.
• The test sequence follows in the order of Course 1, Course 2 and Course 3, executed successively. After passing the preceding test, the applicant may participate in the test for the next course. Each test is taken one time, and may be re-taken one time. If the applicant fails the test twice, the current test of course is over, he/she has to re-apply for the test. But the tests for Course 2 and Course 3 must be reserved 20 days later.
• An applicant who exhibits inappropriate or fraudulent behavior during the test process his/her qualification for the test will be nullified, and all previous results will be invalidated.

License issuance

After the applicant has passed test of course 2 and 3, the Motor Vehicle Administration will issue a driver's license within five business days.

Required Documents

• Motor vehicle driver's license application form
• Identity (b) the applicant to prove;
• Proof of the county or above the regimental level medical institutions issued by the relevant health conditions.
• Your passport, as well as a copy of the picture page of your passport
• A copy of your residence permit or visa (must be valid for three or more months) as well as your registration form of temporary residence (the slip you get from the police station)
• A copy of the latest entry stamp in your passport
• A copy of both sides of your foreign drivers license
• A legal translation of your license done by a certified translator

• A completed health check this can be done at most hospitals for under 50 RMB. These most be provincial-level hospitals or higher. Embassy workers and diplomats should get health checks in accordance with their embassys provisions.

Eligibility

If youre driving anything that is powered by diesel or gasoline (yes, this includes motor scooters), you need a drivers license.

To apply low-speed truck, three cars, three-wheeled motorcycle ordinary, ordinary two wheeled motorcycle or mechanical vehicles permitted to drive on their own, and in more than 18 years, 60 years of age.

Processing Time

Instructions

Its required that you have a residency permit (even just a temporary one) in order to receive a motorbike license.

Handling procedures:

For the first time for a person to apply for a driving license, shall apply to the vehicle management in accordance with the following provisions:

• In the domicile of residence shall be filed in the domicile;
• living in temporary accommodation, can apply for temporary residence;
• active duty (including police), shall apply in place of residence;
• foreign persons, shall be filed in the residence.

Need for the Document

The process for actually getting this license is similar to getting a license to drive a car.

If you dont have a drivers license at all, even a foreign one, youll have to take a written test, a minimum of 35 hours of driving lessons, a health check (which basically just consists of an eye exam) and then a driving test. If you already have a license, either one for a car or a foreign one, then you just need to submit the health check and take the written test. But remember China does not accept the International Drivers License as a valid license, so youre just going to have to suck it up and take the actual Chinese drivers test.

Even if you already have a Chinese drivers license to operate a car, you still need to get a different license to drive a motorbike. Youll want to get either a D license (which allows you to drive every kind of motorbike, including one with a sidecar), an E license (which allows you to drive any two-wheeled motorbike) or an F license (which only allows you to drive a two-wheeled motorbike under a certain engine power), depending on your preference.
