ProcedureEdit

  • You shall come to the visa office of the Embassy or Consulate -General in the consular jurisdiction where you reside to submit the application; or
  • If you cannot come personally, you may send someone else or a travel/visa agent to come to the visa office of the Embassy or Consulate -General in the consular jurisdiction where you reside for application process.
  • Mail applications are not acceptable and will be returned.
  • No appointment is required.

Required DocumentsEdit

X1 visa is issued to those who intend to study in China for a period of more than 180 days.

Documentation required:

  • Original passport with at least six months of remaining validity and blank visa pages, and a photocopy of the passport's data page and the photo page if it is separate.
  • One completed Visa Application Form with a recently-taken color passport photo (bare-head, full face) against a light background attached.
  • Proof of legal stay or residence status (applicable to those not applying for the visa in their country of citizenship)
  • Original and photocopy of the Admission Letter issued by a school or other entities in China.
  • Original and photocopy of "Visa Application for Study in China" (Form JW201 or Form JW202).

Besides the documentation mentioned above, other documents might be required by visa officers in order to decide whether to issue the visa on a case by case basis.

X2 visa is issued to those who intend to study in China for a period of no more than 180 days.

Documentations required:

  • Original passport with at least six months of remaining validity and blank visa pages, and a photocopy of the passport's data page and the photo page if it is separate.
  • One completed Visa Application Form with a recently-taken color passport photo (bare-head, full face) against a light background attached.
  • Proof of legal stay or residence status (applicable to those not applying for the visa in their country of citizenship)

EligibilityEdit

Students who intend to study in China need to apply for a visa. Foreign students studying in China are required to hold an ordinary passport and either a X1 visa (study period of more than 180 days) or a X2 visa (study period of no more than 180 days.).

Applicants should apply for a Chinese visa from their nearest Chinese Embassy or Consulate.

Based on Chinese laws and regulations, Chinese consular officials may decide on the type of visa, number of entries, validity period and duration of stay, and may also refuse a visa application or revoke an issued visa.

Foreign citizens should have applied for and obtained appropriate visas before entering China unless they are visa-exempt according to certain agreements and regulations.

You are advised to ensure that your visa is valid before travel. If your visa has expired or the visa has insufficient number of entries, you need to apply for a new visa.

You can prepare your application form on the website and print it out. Please note that it is only a tool for completing an application form, not an online application.

It is not possible to apply for a visa through the Internet currently. You need to submit all the required application documents to the Visa Centre, and the Visa Centre staff will then handle your application.

A visa is an officially approved document issued by authorized bodies for the government, in accordance with the laws of the country, to foreign citizens applying to enter, leave or transit through the country.

A Chinese student visa is required for enrollment in a study course in China.

A Chinese student (X1) visa is typically issued for long-term study (more than 180 days) in China.

A Chinese student (X2) visa is typically issued for short-term study short-term study (less than 180 days) in China.

Study Visa (X1/X2) China Student visa (X Visa) is issued to those who have been admitted by a Chinese college. Student Visa is sub-divided into X1 and X2. X1 is issued to students who go to China for study for more than 6 months. X2 is issued to those who go to China with same purpose but for a period of less than 6 months. X1 visa is usually issued for multiple entry with validity up to 5 years. Holder of X1 visa must register at local public security bureau within 30 days of arrival, where the China Residence Permit will be issued to replace X1 visa. X2 visa is usually issued for one entry with validity up to 6 months. In order to apply for China X Visa, please prepare and send in your application according to the detail requirement explained below. Chinas Visa Authorities are:

  • Chinese diplomatic missions, consular posts, Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Macao Special Administrative Region, and other resident organizations abroad authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are responsible for handling visa applications by foreign citizens for entry into and transit through mainland China and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China.
  • The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the local foreign affairs offices authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are responsible for issuance, change and extension of diplomatic and service visas and for issuance of residence permit to holders of diplomatic and service visas.
  • The Ministry of Public Security and the local public security authorities authorized by the Ministry of Public Security are responsible for inspection on entry and exit of foreigners, issuance of visas at the port of entry, extension and change of ordinary visas, and issuance of residence permit to holders of ordinary visas, who are already in China.

Generally speaking, you should submit your application in person and collect your passport with an issued visa. If circumstances really prevent you from doing so(e.g. illness), you may entrust someone else to do it for you (no need to provide a power of attorney) providing that you have prepared all the documents required and signed the application form.

(X) visa is valid for one entry, three months. The holder of a (X) visa shall go through residential formalities in the local public security department within thirty days of entry into China.

Any person suffering from mental disorder, leprosy, AIDS, venereal diseases, contagious tuberculosis or other such infectious diseases shall not be permitted to enter China.

The Consular Officers have the authority to refuse any visa applications inconsistent with Chinese laws and regulations, or revoke issued visas.
