Chile - Obtain a Police Clearance Certificate (Certificate of Good Conduct Or Criminal Record)

Introduction

A police certificate is an official document issued by police or government agency of a country to state and enumerate any criminal records that the applicant may have. Criminal records may include arrest, conviction, and possibly criminal proceedings.

It is also known as good citizen certificate, good conduct certificate, police clearance certificate, or judicial record extracts.

Following is a procedure on how to obtain a police clearance certificate in Chile.

Eligibility

Having an identity card, valid and in good condition (not valid on presentation of proof of application).

If applicable, attach original special power of attorney or general mandate that power.

To obtain a criminal record certificate online, you must have unique key.

Certificates background for people not living in the country can be ordered in the following ways:

  • Using the consulates of Chile in the country where it is located, or the closest that online system available to the Service of Civil Registry and Identification.
  • Power of Attorney granted by the Consulate, to be filled by the president in Chile (power with express power to obtain clearance certificate entitling a third party to carry out this procedure).
  • The power given to the Consulate, must be authorized or endorsed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Instructions

Chilean citizens who apply for police certificates in Chile must do so in person at the Civil Registry and the certificate is delivered immediately. In Santiago, the Civil Registry is located at Huerfanos 1560, and the business hours are Monday through Friday from 08:30 to 15:30. Applicants must carry their valid Chilean Identification Card (Cedula Nacional de Identidad).

Chilean citizens abroad may apply through the nearest Chilean Consulate, which will forward the application to the Civil Registry. Foreigners resident in Chile who have a Chilean Identity Card follow the same procedures as Chilean citizens. There may be a fee for this service.

Procedure

Online

  1. Go to https://www.registrocivil.cl/. Click on "Online Certificate". Select and click on "Certificate of Good Behavior".
  2. Enter your unique key.
  3. Complete the form and follow the instructions.
  4. Confirm the certificate and click pay.
  5. A copy will be sent to your email.

In Person

  1. Gather all documents specified in requirements.
  2. Go to any of the offices of the Civil Registry.
  3. As you enter, go to module "Certificates".
  4. Present and submit official documents referred to the first step and pay the fee.

Fees

Police Clearance Certificate - $1,050

Note: For online transactions, $201 fee is added.

Validity

A Police Clearance Certificate is valid for three months.

      • Applicants residing in Chile who are indisposed may provide a notarized authorization to a 3rd party representative to apply on their behalf.
    • If you live outside Chile:
      • You can apply for a Certificado de Antecedentes para Fines Especiales and an original Hoja de vida del Conductor at your nearest Chilean embassy or consulate or online at Servicio de Registro Civil e Identificación (available in Spanish only) with your “RUT.”
  • If you are not a citizen of Chile:
    • If you live in Chile:
      • You can apply in person at any office of the Registro Civil e Identification, with your “RUT” or online with Servicio de Registro Civil e Identificacion (available in Spanish only).

Other uses of the Document/Certificate

The Service provides the following certificates and background reports pursuant to Article No. 12 of Presidential Decree No. 64 of the Ministry of Justice, 1932:

  • Type A): To operate a motor vehicle.
  • Type B): For applicants to join the Public, Local Government, semifiscal, institutions of self-government, Armed Forces, Police, Prisons Research and Services.
  • The type A and B certificates are awarded directly to institutions that request.
  • Type C): For particular purposes.
  • Type D): For special purposes (when specifically requested to do so in any institution for a particular procedure or management).
  • The type C and D certificates are issued only to the owner, or an agent with power of attorney for this purpose or general mandate to contain such power.
