A death certificate is issued in the place where the death occurred due to the fact that records of civil status are kept there. For example a person can have a permanent address in Sofia but if he/she died during a vacation in Varna, then the death certificate must be issued in Varna.

A death notice is issued by the GP or hospital / depending on where the death occurred.

It is free of charge and the GP is obliged to issue it.For this purpose the identity card of the deceased must be provided. According to the Civil Registration Act a death certificate is drawn not later than 48 hours after death, based on a death notification issued by a competent medical person.
