Bulgaria - Obtain a Death Certificate

A death certificate is issued in the place where the death occurred due to the fact that records of civil status are kept there. For example a person can have a permanent address in Sofia but if he/she died during a vacation in Varna, then the death certificate must be issued in Varna.
A death notice is issued by the GP or hospital / depending on where the death occurred.
It is free of charge and the GP is obliged to issue it.For this purpose the identity card of the deceased must be provided. According to the Civil Registration Act a death certificate is drawn not later than 48 hours after death, based on a death notification issued by a competent medical person.

If you want to obtain a death certificate for a second and subsequent time, it is recommended that you check exactly what year and on what date the person died because if you dont know this will hinder the municipal employees.
Other uses of the Document/CertificateEdit
After the death of an insured person, their spouse, children and parents have the right to a death benefit payable in a lump sum and the equivalent of two month's wages. The following documents must be presented to the local office of the National Social Security Institute:
- An application form
- Applicants identification card
- An heir certificate
- Photocopy of the death certificate
The heirs also fill in a form, certifying their personal bank accounts to which the proportionate sum will be transferred to each one of them.
