Apply Online

  1. To apply for EI benefits for Canadian living abroad, the applicant will need to submit the relevant insurance application form online, this must be done as soon as possible, find further information under the “Instructions” section of this page.
  2. Click on the following link to view the various employment insurances, scroll to the bottom to view all Link
  3. Once the applicant has selected the insurance they want, click on it and follow the steps mentioned on the website.
  4. The applicant will need to answer eligibility questions.
  5. Under “What type of benefit would you like to claim?”, click on the option that applies to the applicant.
  6. Under “What type of benefit are you applying for?”, click on the one that applies to the applicant and click on “Continue”.
  7. The applicant will be directed to the application page, enter all the relevant details and click on “Continue”.
  8. The applicant will need to upload copies of documents, find a list of documents under the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  9. The applicant will need to enter details of employers as well as their bank information, once all details have been entered, click on “Submit”.
  10. The applicant does not need to make a fee payment to obtain benefits.
  11. Once the application and the document have been submitted, the applicant will receive a benefit statement and four-digit code by email.
  12. The applicant will need this code and their Social Insurance Number to track their application.
  13. The applicant can track their applicant from the Service Canada Centre or MSCA account.
  14. The applicant shall start receiving benefits within 28 days from the submission of the application.


Creating a My Service Canada Account (MSCA)

  1. The applicant will have to register for a My Service Canada Account (MSCA). If the applicant has an account login. If the applicant does not have an account, follow these steps:
    • To create an account, click on the following Link.
    • Scroll to the bottom and under the “New User” option, click on the option the applicant would like to register using.
    • Click on “Start now”.
    • The applicant will need to enter all the relevant details such as username, password, bank details and so on and the account will be created.

  • If the applicant’s SIN starts with a ‘9’ they will need to submit the following documents:
    • Proof of immigration status
    • Proof of work permit
    • All records of employment in paper format (This can be submitted at the Service Canada Centre or mailed, find mailing address under “Office Locations and Contacts”)

EligibilityEdit

  • The applicant must be a Canadian citizen living abroad.
  • The applicant must have a social insurance number.
  • The applicant must meet the eligibility criteria for the respective employment insurances.

  • There is a one week waiting period before the applicant starts receiving money, this is the deductible for the employment insurance.

  • A Canadian living abroad can apply for a range of benefits, this includes for military families, sickness, maternity, employment and others.
  • The applicant must apply for benefits as soon as possible; the applicant cannot apply any later than four weeks after their last day of work.
