Procedure

Apply In Person

1. An application for the renewal of an Air Traffic Controller License (ATCL), shall be submitted to the Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB) office, not later than sixty (60) days prior to the date of expiry of the current license. CAAB Contact Details
2. 3. The completed form, shall be accompanied by all the supporting documentation as mentioned under the “Required Documents” section of this page and submitted to the CAAB head office, Personal Licensing unit for consideration, only if the applicant is a holder of a valid medical certificate or after ascertaining that your medical assessment has been assessed as “fit” by the Civil Aviation Medical Board (CAMB). This will be certified in the Aviation Medical Assessment application form. Any omission of the required information or documents will render the application process incomplete.
4. Upon receipt of the application, the Personal Licensing officers will check for discrepancies or ineligibility in the application documents. If a discrepancy that cannot be immediately corrected exists in any of the documents, the application and all the submitted documents will be returned to the applicant and should not be re-submitted until the discrepancy has been rectified.
5. If the Personal Licensing officer is satisfied that all the requirements have been met for the application for the license, the application is registered for processing and consideration.
6. Applicants will be required to pay prescribed fees of BWP 275.00 as mentioned on the CAAB fee schedule (refer to the “Fees” section of this page), which is payable either in cash at the CAAB cashier counter/accounts office or by cheque in favour of the CAAB.
7. The applicant is issued with a payment slip and an acknowledgment slip as proof of submission of the application and for inquiry referencing if the need arises.
8. After the successful screening of the submitted documents, a notice of the decision (Approval, Deferral, or Rejection) for the application will be communicated to the applicant by phone or mail after fourteen (14) working days.
9. Proceed to the CAAB personal registration and license office and present the acknowledgment letter and identity document and proof of payment of the license fee to be validated by the licensing office.
10. The applicant will be made to, sign on the signature pad/book and will be issued with the endorsed Air traffic controller license.

Eligibility

• An air traffic controller licence may be renewed if the holder demonstrates, at a level appropriate to the privileges being renewed, the skill, judgement and performance required to provide a safe, orderly and expeditious control service within the six months preceding the date of application for renewal.

Fees

• A fee of BWP 275.00 is charged for the renewal application.

Validity

• The validity of the air traffic controller licence shall be mentioned on the license and it shall remain valid for that specified period unless, suspended, revoked or cancelled by the authority.
• Applicants need to apply for license renewal to CAAB at least sixty (60) days before expiry.

Need for the Document

A person should not act as an air traffic controller (ATC), unless that person holds an air traffic controller license issued under the Regulations. A license to act as an air traffic controller includes-

• one or more ratings specifying the type of air traffic control service which the holder of the license is competent to provide, and
• a list of the places at which, and the type of radar equipment, if any, with the aid of which the license holder may provide the service.
