Botswana - Apply or Renew Practicing Certificate in Engineering Registration Board

Apply In-Person
- An engineer who has been issued with a practicing certificate shall, within three months before the certificate expires, apply for renewal of the Practicing certificate to the Engineers Registration Board (ERB). ERB Website
- Applicants are required to collect and complete the Application Form for Practicing Certificate, obtainable at the ERB office or download it via the ERB website ERB Application Forms, or download it directly using this link, Application Form for Practicing Certificate
- Submit the supporting documentation as mentioned under the “Required Documents” section of this page, in addition to the duly completed application form in all respect to the ERA registrar's office. Any omission of these documents will render the registration process incomplete.
- Pay the applicable fees, either by depositing into the ERB account or can be received through the Point of Sale (POS) machine (swiping machine) at the ERB offices. Alternatively, you can pay by cheque written in favor of the Engineers Registration Board. No cash is handled at the ERB offices and as such, you should not give anybody any money for them to assist you.
- Upon receipt of the application file, the registrar will verify if all the necessary information and documentation has been provided and that the applications comply with the selection criteria before registering the application file for assessment and consideration by the Board.
- Applicants will be issued with an ERB payment receipt and an acknowledgment slip as proof of submission of the application.
- Upon receipt of the application file, the board shall not approve the issue of a practicing certificate if-
- The applicant is insolvent;
- The declaration contains a statement that to its knowledge is false in a material particular; or
- The Board is not satisfied that the applicant has complied with the requirements relating to continuing professional development determined by the Board.
- The Board shall approve the renewal of the practicing certificate, where the applicant continues to meet the eligibility requirements and demonstrates the required standards of an engineer.
- Applicants are notified in writing about Board resolutions, regarding their applications.
- If approved, the practicing certificate shall be issued to the applicant, upon presenting their identity document, ERD payment slip, and approved a letter to be validated by the registrar's office at the ERB.
- The practicing certificate issued shall specify the address of the principal place of practice and other places of practice and all other places of the practice of the engineer to whom the practicing certificate is issued.

- The practicing certificate can also be renewed online through the ERB website, using this link, ERB Practicing Certificate Application/Renewal online page
- Note: Remember to have your registration number handy when completing the form.
- The Practicing Certificate Application/Renewal form, “Personal” detail section, complete accurately all mandatory fields then click on the “Next” button.
- The “Employment” detail Section will be displayed, fill it and then click on the “Next” button.
- The “Registration” detail Section will be displayed, fill it and then click on the “Next” button
- The “CPD Credits Attained” detail Section will be displayed, which should be completed only if the applicant is applying for the Engineering Professional category then click on the “Next” button.
- If you are registered in the Engineering Professional category, remember to email your CPD logbook to [email protected].
- The “Declaration” detail Section will be displayed, if all the information is accurate, click on the “yes” option then click on the “Submit” button.
- Once you have submitted your application, an acknowledgment notification will be displayed on your screen, informing you that your submission was successful.
- Upon receipt of the application file, the receiving officer will verify if all the necessary information and documentation has been provided and that the applications comply with the selection criteria before registering the application file for assessment and consideration by the Board.
- Upon receipt of the application file, the board shall not approve the issue of a practicing certificate if-
- The applicant is insolvent;
- The declaration contains a statement that to its knowledge is false in a material particular; or
- The Board is not satisfied that the applicant has complied with the requirements relating to continuing professional development determined by the Board.
- The Board shall approve the renewal of the practicing certificate, where the applicant continues to meet the eligibility requirements and demonstrates the required standards of an engineer.
- Applicants are notified via email about Board resolutions (Approval, Deferral, or Rejection), regarding their applications.
- If approved, the board will direct the registrar to draw up the practicing certificate, and made it available to be issued to the client, upon presenting their identity document and proof of payment of the applicable fee to be validated by the registrar's office at the ERB.
- Applicable fees are either deposited into the ERB account or can be received through the Point of Sale (POS) machine (swiping machine) at the ERB offices. Alternatively, you can pay by cheque written in favor of the Engineers Registration Board. Appeal to the High Court.
An engineer whose application for a practicing certificate has been refused by the Board may, within 30 days after being notified of such refusal, appeal to the High Court.

PAYMENT METHOD NOTES:
- The accepted method of payment is direct deposits into the ERB bank account or using your debit or credit card at the POS machine available at the ERB offices.
- No cash will be accepted at ERB Offices. Cheques sent to ERB by post will also not be accepted. ERB will take no responsibility for cheques lost in the post or intercepted and fraudulently banked in another party’s bank account.
- When payments are made at the Bank, an applicant must quote their full name as the reference.

- The certificate shall be valid for one year unless suspended, revoked, or cancelled by the authority and shall be subjected to renewal upon expiring.
