Botswana - Apply for a School Bus Permit or License

Apply In Person
- All applications for School Bus Permit or License are filed and process at the Department of Road Transport and Safety office {DRTS} office, which is under the Ministry of Transport and Communications, (View address/contact details below).
- Collect the Road transport permit application form, available at the inquiries desk at the Department of Road Transport and Safety Offices across the country, or use this link to download; Link
- Read through the instruction section carefully and fill the application accurately as per your request, if you require any assistance when filling the form or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact/or ask your nearest DRTS Office for assistance.
- Note; Additional information may be given on a separate sheet of paper if there is insufficient room on the application form.
- Submit the completed form, along with the attachments (mentioned below under the ‘Required Documents’ section) to the attending official at the regional DRST office.
- The official will then verify, if all the necessary information and documents have been provided and that the applications comply with the selection criteria, if everything is in order, you ( the applicant) will be advised to pay for the application fee (non-refundable) to the Registration and licensing officer
- You will be booked for a hearing with the Transport advisory board and issued with an acknowledgment slip containing details of the hearing.
- Applicants are required to avail themselves in person during the hearing. It is at this point that the decision would be made, by the Transport advisory board, if the application request is to be approved for processing or not.
- If approved, the applicant must then book, for a vehicle inspection with the DRTS Transport Inspection Department. The vehicle should then be present at the DRTS inspection site on the scheduled date/time for the inspection, if the inspection is failed, applicants must comply with Inspector's instructions to rectify any vehicle issues that may have caused the failure and re-apply for the inspection.
- Applicants whose vehicles pass the inspection are issued inspection certificates.
- You should then take the inspection certificate and all of the other supporting documents to the Registration and licensing officer and pay the permit fee.
- Once the permit fee is paid, the School bus permit will be signed/stamp by the authorized official and issued to the applicant immediately against his/her identification document.
Note:
- Any applicant aggrieved by the decision of the DRTS Regional Transport advisory board may file for an appeal at a cost of BWP200.00

- Copy of a valid roadworthiness certificate
- Certified copy of valid Identity Document of the applicant.
- If a company, a copy of the certificate of incorporation & shareholder’s certificate
- List of students
- Authorization letter from the school administration.
- Copy of the vehicle's registration document (blue book).
- Copy of vehicle's valid Roadworthiness Certificate (upon collection of certificate).
- Vehicle Inspection Certificate (only if the permit application is approved by the board).
- Copy of Certificate of Incorporation (companies).
- Copy of one director's certified National ID (companies).
- Copy of Shareholder's Certificates (companies).
- Copy of business proposal (companies).

- Local-registered business.
FeesEdit
The legal fees are;
- Application fee: BWP 130.00 {non-refundable}
- The permit fee for Minibus: BWP 299.00
- The permit fee for Bus: BWP 403.00
- Appeals Fee: BWP200.00

ValidityEdit
- The validity of the permit is indicated/mentioned on the permit and it is renewable thereafter.
Note:
- The penalty for late renewal of the permit is BWP26.00 per day excluding public holidays and weekends.
