Apply In-Person

  1. The application for Environmental Research Permit or License shall be made to the Research and Development Unit at the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation, and Tourism (MENRCT) office.Ministry contact details

Applicants are required to collect and complete the Application Form for Research Permit, copies of these forms are available for free at Research and Development Unit, MENRCT office or the Botswana High Commissions and Embassies abroad or directly download it using this link;Research Permit Application Form
  3. The application form duly completed in all respect, and the supporting documentation should be submitted by e-mail to [email protected] or post to Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation, and Tourism office.
  4. Upon receipt of the application file, the Research and Development Unit will verify, if all the necessary information and documentation has been provided and that the applications comply with the selection criteria before registering the file for processing and consideration, which is between Forty (40) to forty-five (45) working days.
  5. Applicants will then be notified of the outcome of their application by Mail or Post, if the application is approved, a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) will be sent to the prospective researcher for signing by mail or post, and upon signing the MoA, the researcher should send it back to the Research and Development Unit either via mail or post
  6. Upon receipt of the signed MoA by the Research and Development Unit, the Research Permit will be drawn up, signed and stamped, and made available to be issued to the applicant at the MENRCT; Research and Development Unit office.
  7. The applicant will be required to produce a proof of identity document and pay the license fee as mentioned under the “FEE” section of this page while collecting the Environmental Research Permit or License.

NOTE

  • Applicants from foreign countries are advised not to leave for Botswana before being notified by the ministry that the research permit has being approved.

The following fee is chargeable;

  • Citizens: BWP 250.00
  • Residents: BWP500.00
  • Non-Residents: BWP 1000.00

Please Note:

  • These fees do not apply to the Gemsbok National Park or the educational reserves in Gaborone, Francistown, and Maun.

Submission of a Final Report
It is a statutory requirement that the researcher should submit a preliminary report (hard and soft copy) to the Ministry and the following institutions and any other departments as may be specified in the permit:

  • Name and address of Applicant (include Tel/Fax and E-mail)
  • Name and address of home institutions (if any) to which you are affiliated
  • Name and address of supervisor of research (in-home country) or responsible referee
  • Research plan (attach a research proposal if available)
  • Budget for the costs in Botswana (give a detailed breakdown of research costs such as subsistence, travel/transport, local staff, secretarial services, seminar (s), printing, etc.)
  • Name and address of financial sponsor (s) of the research (if applicable)
  • Has funding already been obtained (Yes/No)
  • If you have previously researched in Botswana, please give details of the research
  • Name and address of institution in Botswana to which the researcher is to be affiliated
  • Details of Botswana-based personnel that will be involved (names, functions, qualifications)
  • Places in Botswana where the research is to be undertaken
  • Proposed time schedule for the research
  • Plans for dissemination of research findings
  • How are the research findings going to be used in the home country?
  • Signature of the applicant
