Apply In Person

  1. To apply for a Driver's license, the applicant should submit their completed application file to the Department of Road Transport and Safety office which is under, Ministry of Transport and Communications office. (View address details mentioned under ‘office location and contacts’ section below).
  2. Applicants are required to complete the following forms; Application for a Botswana Driving license/permit form,for Applicants of 65 years or older or applying for a class C, C1, EC, or EC1 license are also required to additionally submit the Health Declaration form (DL31), forms are available at the Enquiries Desk at any of the offices of the Department of Road Transport and Safety or directly download them using this links;
  3. Applicants will then be required to go to the eye screening office for an eye examination. In the case of applicants with eyesight challenges, the Registration and Licensing Officer at the Regional Department of Road Transport and Safety office would refer them to be seen by an external eye specialist for further testing.
  4. Only after the external eye specialist recommends that the driving license application process will commence i.e. {Driver License Theory test and practical test} be continued should the applicants return to the Registration and Licensing Officer with the results and recommendations.
  5. Applicants should then submit the duly completed application forms along with the relevant attachments (mentioned below under the ‘Required Documents’ section) to the Registration and licensing Officer at the nearest Department of Road Transport and Safety office (DRTS) for approval.
  6. On receipt of the application file, the Registration and licensing officer will then verify, if all the necessary information and documents have been provided for processing.
  7. Applicants will then be advised to pay for the theory test and Question Booklet if the applicant prefers to do the exam manually, at the DRTS cash counter and obtain a payment receipt.
  8. Present the payment receipt to the Registration and Licensing Officer, who will then book you for the theory exams and issue you with an acknowledgment letter indicating the preferred method of testing (electronic or manual) and the appointed time and venue, where the theory test will be conducted.
  9. Applicants are required to arrive on time at the exam room and undergo the exams based on the instructions received for the chosen method. The pass mark for the theory test is 26 out of 30 for classes A, B, F, and H, and 39 out of 45 for classes C, C1, EB, EC, and EC1.
  10. Applicants will be notified of the result of their theory test by phone, mail, or SMS, unsuccessful applicants must reapply for the theory test only after 14 days have elapsed.
  11. If successful, submit your results and supporting documents to the Licensing officer to apply for the Provisional Learner's license and pay the required fee.
  12. Once you have obtained a provisional/learner's license you may start practicing for the practical driving test (supervised).
  13. When ready the applicant must pay and book for practical test (yard and road) at the nearest DRTS office with all documents (Provisional Learner's License, theory test results, and eye screening results).
  14. Present the payment receipt to the Registration and Licensing Officer, who will then book you for the practical test and issue you with an acknowledgment letter indicating the appointed time and venue, where the practical test will be conducted.
  15. You will then be required to Undertake the two-step practical test (yard and road), in that order, Note; candidates are only allowed to do the road test after successful completion of the yard portion.
  16. Successful candidates will be issued with the practical test results, If successful, you should head to the nearest DRTS office and submit the following documents (Provisional Learner's License, theory test results, practical test results, valid identity card, and eye screening results) to be validated by the Registration and Licensing Officer. if everything is in the order you will be issued with an invoice indicating the fee that is to be paid.
  17. Proceed to the DRTS cash counter and make payment against the invoice and obtain a payment receipt.
  18. Present the payment receipt to the Registration and Licensing Officer and have your photo taken. After the photo is taken, sign on the signature pad, and collect your printed driving license against your identity document.

All citizens and residents, or visitors with exemption certificates, who meet the below age criteria may apply for a Botswana driving license.

Need for the DocumentEdit

  • The driving license is issued as an authority to allow a person to drive a motor vehicle of any class on a road in Botswana.
  • No person is allowed to drive a motor vehicle on road in Botswana unless he is the holder of a valid driving license or a provisional license endorsed in respect of that class of vehicle.
  • Any person driving a motor vehicle on a road is required by law to carry his driving license or provisional license, and on being so required by a police officer, produce it for examination.
  • The driving license shows compliance with Botswana traffic laws regarding driving.
