Procedure

Apply In-Person

1. To apply for a diplomatic card, new members of the diplomatic corps should visit the Department of Protocol and Consular Services housed at the Ministry of International Affairs and Cooperation (MIAC) office. MIAC contact link details
2. Submit the Note Verbale to be validated by the Department of Protocol and Consular Services authorized officer, if the officer is satisfied that the applicant is eligible; he/she will issue the applicant the Application Form for Diplomatic Identity Card Form to complete or directly download it using this Application for Diplomatic Identity Card Form link
3. Submit the duly completed form and the attachment, to the department authorized officer who will verify if all the necessary information and documentation has been provided and that the applications comply with the selection criteria before registering the file.
4. Applicants will be issued with an acknowledgment letter as proof of submission of the application.
5. Once processing is completed; which is usually within 2 working days, the applicant will be contacted via phone/mail/ fax and notified of the outcome.
6. If approved, the Diplomatic Identity Card will be drawn up, signed, and stamped by the authorized office and made available for withdrawal by the applicant in person at the department dispatch office.
7. The applicant will be required to produce a proof of identity document and the acknowledgment letter while collecting his/her Diplomatic identity card.

• Copy of passport and a passport-sized photograph.
• A marriage certificate is required for an application for a spouse.
• A Note Verbale (is a diplomatic communication from one government to another)

Eligibility

• All members of the Diplomatic Corps (Diplomatic agents and their spouses).

Note: Children of the diplomats are not entitled to the Diplomatic IDs.

Fees

No fee associate with the service.

Validity

The card is valid as long as the Diplomatic Corps is still posted in Botswana.

• Official stamp and signature of the head of the mission/authorized officer
