How to Apply
Apply In-Person

  1. Applicants should visit the Ministry of Nationality, Immigration and Gender Affairs, Department of Immigration and Citizenship, nearest Regional or District Offices or Botswana Missions abroad for the application process for the citizenship by settlement {see address details below}.
  2. Collect and submit the completed Form A “Declaration concerning citizenship of Botswana by Settlement” along with the relevant supporting documents {as listed to the under required document section below} to the immigration offices or embassy/consulate office, to be verified by the attending officer.
  3. Applicants will then be required to pay the processing fee at the immigration/embassy office, cash counter and obtain an acknowledgment slip.
  4. All application file will then be forwarded to the Department of immigration and Citizenship office in Botswana for evaluation and processing.
  5. After processing, the response will be sent to the applicant by letter through mail,'requesting you to take the oath of allegiance in the presence of a magistrate, Commissioner for Oaths/Notary Public in Botswana or a Botswana ambassador/consul if abroad.
  6. Note Two witnesses (Botswana citizens) should be present during the oath taking process and there should carry their copies of their identity documents
  7. If your application is rejected a rejection letter will be sent to you via mail. You can re-apply if you wish. (There is no time restriction for re-submission).
  8. Upon taking the oath, the certificate Citizenship by settlement will be drawn up by the Department of immigration and Citizenship and issued to the applicant at the immigration offices or embassy/consulate office, upon payment of the required certificate fee and against the applicant identification document and acknowledgment slip.

Required DocumentsEdit

  • Two coloured passport sized photos.
  • Certified copy of valid birth certificate or affidavit in lieu of birth certificate.
  • Personal declaration to establish nationality (Form obtained from Immigration Offices).
  • Certified copy of valid residence permits if available.
  • Proof that the applicant has been in Botswana for such a period (i.e. letter from tribal authority).

Opening hours: 7:30 to 12:45, and 13:45 to 16:30, Monday to Friday, except public holidays.

EligibilityEdit

  • Foreign nationals who have settled in Botswana immediately before 30 September 1966 and have lived as members or been customarily accepted as members of a particular tribe or community.


FeesEdit

  • Application processing fee is BWP200.00


ValidityEdit

  • The Certificate is Valid Forever and it is issued once i.e. there is no replacement, if it get lost/stolen/damaged.
