Procedure

How to Apply
Apply In-Person

1. Applicants should visit the Ministry of Nationality, Immigration and Gender Affairs, Department of Immigration and Citizenship, nearest Regional or District Offices or Botswana Missions abroad for the application process for the citizenship Naturalization of Foreign Spouse {see address details below}.
2. Collect and submit the completed Form L “Certificate for Naturalization” along with the relevant supporting documents {as listed to the under required document section below} to the immigration offices or embassy/consulate office, to be verified by the attending officer.
3. Applicants will then be required to pay the processing fee at the immigration/embassy office, cash counter and obtain an acknowledgment slip.
4. All application file will then be forwarded to the Department of immigration and Citizenship office in Botswana for evaluation and processing.
5. The department of immigration and Citizenship office will then send you a letter via post inviting you for a citizenship interview.
6. Applicants are then required to avail themselves for the interview at the immigration and citizenship office in Botswana, at the scheduled appointment date and time as outlined in the letter.
7. If your application is successful, a letter will be sent to you by mail, requesting you to renounce your foreign citizenship in the presence of a magistrate, Commissioner for Oaths/Notary Public) in Botswana or a Botswana ambassador/consul if abroad.
8. If your application is rejected a rejection letter will be sent to you via mail. You can re-apply if you wish. (There is no time restriction for re-submission).
9. The certificate of Citizenship by Naturalization will then be drawn by the Department of immigration and Citizenship and issued to the applicant at the immigration offices or embassy/consulate office, upon payment of the required certificate fee and against the applicant identification document and acknowledgment slip

• Completed Certificate for Naturalization (Form L)
• Two recent coloured passport size photos
• Two certified copies of valid Botswana residence permit
• Completed set of police report forms
• Certified copy of birth certificate
• Certified copy of marriage certificate and copy of spouse’s citizenship status (if applicable)
• Certified copies of applicant’s educational qualifications (if married, also provide spouse’s educational qualifications)
• Copy of Curriculum Vitae

Additional Requirements for Student

• Admission letter from the educational institution
• Proof of payment of tuition

Additional Requirements for Dependents and Immigrants

• Proof of parents’ citizenship status

Additional Requirements for Employees

• Value of property owned.
• Employment contract

Additional Requirements for Investors
Those operating businesses should state:

• Name of business.
• Location of business.
• Service provided.
• Number of employees hired.
• Number of shares held.
• Value of property owned or copy of lease agreement.
• Type of trading license held.
• Tax return for the past year

For abroad applications, please contact your nearest Botswana Embassy or High Commission to help you.

Opening hours: 7:30 to 12:45, and 13:45 to 16:30, Monday to Friday, except public holidays.

Eligibility

• Foreigners who have resided in Botswana for an aggregate period of not less than ten years and have resided in Botswana for a continuous period of twelve months immediately preceding the date of application.

Fees

• Processing legal fee is BWP1000.00

Validity

• The Certificate is Valid Forever and it is issued once i.e. there is no replacement, if it get lost/stolen/damaged.
