Apply In-Person

  1. To apply for a change of land use, the person concerned should visit the Botswana Land Board or Sub Land Board offices within the area of jurisdiction. (Use this link to view Botswana Land Board or Sub Land Board offices address: Link.
  2. Applicants are required to collect either the Application for Customary or Common Land Right depending on the intended use. Copies of the Application Form are available for free at any of the Botswana Land Board or Sub Land Board offices countrywide or directly download it using this link : Link Application for customary land rights form Link (Application for common law land rights form)
  3. The application form duly completed in all respect, and the relevant supporting documentation should be submitted to the Botswana Land Board or Sub Land Board offices within the area of the applicants’ jurisdiction.
  4. The receiving official will then verify that all the necessary documentation and information have been provided and that the applications comply with the selection criteria before applicants are allowed to make payment of the prescribed fees mentioned under the “FEE” section of this page
  5. Upon making the required payments, the application file will be registered and applicants will be issued with an acknowledgment letter as proof of submission of the application.
  6. The application file will then be forwarded to the land board Committee for processing and consideration, which is within one month.
  7. Applicant should visit the Botswana Land Board or Sub Land Board offices where the application was filed after the processing period to check the outcome.
  8. If successful; a Deed of Customary/ Common Land right law will be printed on a paper with special security features and issued to the applicant against their identity document and the acknowledgment letter.

  • No outstanding lease rentals for common law plots
  • A certified and valid copy of Omang/ID
  • A Certified Copy of marriage certificate (if not married Affidavit confirming marital status for business plots)
  • A Certified Copy of Instrument signed under Married Persons Property Act (Marriage In/Out of community of property)
  • A Certified copy of the Certificate of incorporation and shareholding (in case of companies)

One can change from single residential to multi-residential and/or business plot such as commercial, industrial, etc. arable fields can also be changed to commercial such as integrated farming, feedlot, etc’
