Procedure

Apply In Person

1. A livestock buyers license is issued to traders (Livestock Buyers, Agents, or Speculators) that desire to purchase livestock for the purpose of trade in the country. This license is issued by the Agribusiness Promotion Office. Department of Agribusiness Promotion (DABP) District Offices Contacts
2. Individuals and companies who are interested in becoming Livestock Buyers, Agents or Speculators are required to visit the nearest DABP District Offices and will be required to confirm details to the Authorized License Issuing Officer on the following;
   • Confirm registration with BAITS for Keeper Identification
   • Particulars for business or an individual
   • The base location of the business
   • District areas of livestock purchase
   • Type of license required
3. Upon being satisfied by the information provided, the DABP office will issue the applicant an Application form to complete which should be attached to the relevant supporting documentation as listed under the “Required Documents” section of this page before being submitted for processing.
4. The application shall be accompanied by a prescribed fee as listed under the “Fees” section of this page.
5. The officer will then verify, if all the necessary information and documents have been provided and that the applications comply with the selection criteria, if everything is in order, the license shall be drawn up and certified by an authorized official and made available for withdrawal by the applicant within a day.
6. The license shall have the name of the bearer and his or her category of registration and it shall also be subjected to terms and conditions as the Department of Agribusiness Promotion (DABP) office deem fit and should be renewed annually.

Eligibility

The following are eligible to apply:

• Registered Business (companies)
• Citizens (Farmers and Individuals)

Fees

The following fees are applicable for the different categories issued the livestock traders license:

• Livestock buyer’s license
  • First-time owners deposit fee BWP 200.00 (The fee is refundable upon termination of the license)
  • The annual License Fee is BWP 70.00
  • The annual license renewal  fee is BWP 70.00 and BWP 52.50 is paid up for licenses issued before and after the 30th of June in every year

• Livestock Buyer’s Agent License
  • License Fee BWP 50.00
  • Annual license renewal is BWP 50.00 and BWP 32.50 for a license issued after the 30th of June.

• Livestock Producers’ Agent License
  • The license fee is BWP 500.00 and expires every 31 December
  • Annual License renewal fee of BWP 500.00.

Validity

• The license shall be renewed annually unless revoked, suspended, or cancelled by the Authority.
• The renewal application should be submitted at least a few days before the expiration date of the current license.

Need for the Document

• The livestock buyer’s license authorizes its holder to purchase livestock for the purpose of trade in the country.

Other Livestock traders licenses are as follows:

• A Livestock buyer’s Agent license is obtained by a buyer who is going to buy on behalf of someone who already has a livestock buyer’s license.
• Livestock Producers Agent license allows its holder to collect mobs of cattle from producers and send them to Botswana Meat Commission abattoirs on their behalf. A holder of this license is permitted to charge a commission of 2.5% on revenue realized from the sales as stipulated in the act for the services offered and not more than that.

Information which might help

Trade here means the acquisition of livestock for slaughter, meat processing plants, retailers, chain shops, for commission (BMC), and other markets and this even includes a farmer buying 50 or more breeding stock for the purposes of a ranch.  A license issued for a particular district can be endorsed ONCE in another district of interest to the buyer to enable trading in that particular district.
