Procedure

Apply In Person

1. Any individual desirous of exporting an animal (cattle) from Botswana is required to lodge an application well in advance of the actual exportation with the Permits Office at any of the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) offices. 2. Before the export permit can be issued, the exporter is required to first obtain an Export Health Certificate For Livestock issued by the Department of Veterinary. The animals must be brought to the state veterinarian for a visual inspection or arranged with the DVS veterinarian for a farm visit inspection. The animals to be exported must be of good health before this certificate is issued.
3. Once issued the Export Health Certificate, exporters are required to collect the Request Form For Export Certificate Of Live Animal(s), obtainable at any Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) District offices or directly download it using this link Request Form For Export Certificate Of Live Animal(s), Animal Product(s), Animal Feed(s), Drug(s), Vaccine(s) And Veterinary Biological(s) Form 4
4. Upon obtaining the application form, the applicant should legibly complete the forms, attach the relevant supporting documentation as listed under the “Required Documents” section of this page. The complete file should be submitted to the DVS District office, permit issue section. Any omission of the supporting documents will render the application process incomplete.
5. Upon submission of the application, the DVS officer will check for discrepancies or ineligibility in the application documents. If a discrepancy that cannot be immediately corrected exists in any of the documents, the application and all the submitted documents will be returned to the applicant and should not be re-submitted until the discrepancy has been rectified corrected.
6. The is no fee associated with this service.
7. Where all the information and documentation submitted are in order, the Export Health Certificate For Livestock and export permit will be issued to the exporter within one day.
8. Exporter will be required to state the means by which they can receive the export permit, either by post, Courier Company at their cost, or self-collect.
9. Where the DVS office is not satisfied that the application meets the requirements for the application, he shall reject the application and notify the applicant thereof in writing, stating the reasons for the rejection.

Note For all permits, the client must return the previous permit before renewal or issuance of subsequent permits, and the product or animal clear details must be provided as well as the quantity.

• Export health certificate issued by Department of Veterinary
• Veterinary import permit from the county of destination
• Proof of livestock ownership
• Valid identification document. (Omang for citizens or Passport/residence permit for foreigner)
• Valid company registration certificate (in case of a company)
• Valid Livestock Keepers Registration Card.
• Any other supporting documentation as requested by the DVS permit office.

Eligibility

• Exporters/farmers/ companies/businesses that desire to export live animals (cattle) from Botswana are eligible to apply.

Fees

• No fee is associated with this service.

Validity

• The validity of the export permit shall be mentioned on the permit and shall remain valid for that stipulated period unless, revoked, cancelled, or suspended by the Authority.

IMPORTANT NOTES
All importers/exporters must note that:

• Only an original permit may accompany the consignment. Faxes or photocopies are not acceptable.
• Applications for permits must be lodged and collected well in time, as often there will be conditions on the permits that should be fulfilled by certifying officers. These conditions may include special tests on animals, quarantine of the animals, inspection of animals, and/or premises.
• In some cases, imports/exports protocols have to be established between concerned countries before import/export permits can be issued. This is often an involved process that may require a long time.

• The Purpose of this Licence is to regulate cattle export business in Botswana and to govern and control the transmission of Animals diseases.

WHAT TO CHECK FOR ONCE ISSUED THE EXPORT PERMIT
Upon being issued with a permit the Exporter should check the following:

• The names and addresses are correct.
• The number/quantity of animals/products are correct and as requested.
• The port of existing is as requested.
• The expiry date on the permit.
• Whether it is a single or multiple consignment permit.
• That the permit has been signed and an official stamp.

NB: It is important that the Exporter reads all the conditions on the permit and requests for any clarifications before leaving the permit's office.
