A Transfer Permit for Domestic Animals
Apply In-Person:
Apply through the Department of Veterinary Services Office.

  1. A cattle movement permit is required when cattle are moved between zones, between holdings, to a slaughter facility, to quarantines, and any area as may be determined by the Director of Veterinary Services from time to time, such application shall be made to be local Department of Veterinary Services Office. Please view the Department of Veterinary Services via this Department of Veterinary Services – Outstations Numbers
  2. The movement request must be submitted at least 2 working days before the intended date of movement.
  3. Those eligible are required to collect and complete the permit request form, obtainable at any of the Department of Veterinary Services Office located countrywide.
  4. submit the completed form attached to the supporting documentation as listed under the “Required Documents” of this page for processing by the Department of Veterinary Services Office.
  5. The is no fee associated with the service.
  6. Upon submission, the application is checked for completeness and correctness by the DVS officer/BAIT officer, if everything is in order the application is registered for processing and consideration.
  7. The time frame for processing the request is usually a working day depending on the quantity of consignment moved.
  8. While collecting the permit the applicant will be required to produce their Valid Keeper ID Card to be validated by the dispatch officer.


Apply through a registered BAITS Clearing Agents office.

  1. A farmer should visit the nearest Botswana Animal Information & Traceability System - BAITS Registered Clearing Agent's office.
  2. The applicant should submit all supporting documentation as listed under the “Required Documents” section of this page to the Clearing Agents for validation.

  4. The agent will then confirm if the farmer is registered with BAITS, if everything is in order the agent will draw up the permit and issue it to the applicant

Online Application
Apply through registered BAITS Cyber Café.

  1. Farmers with access to internet connectivity (Registered BAITS cyber café), should browse the Link and log in using their credentials (username and password) to access the service.
  2. It should be noted that only cybers café registered and given access by the Department of Veterinary Services are capable to access the BAITS servers.
  3. Upon login, please locate the permit form, complete all mandatory fields, upload all supporting documentation as listed on the site as instructed before submitting the completed request file for processing.
  4. The is no fee associated with the issue of the permit.
  5. upon receipt of the request, it is checked for completeness and correctness by the DVS officer/BAIT officer, if everything is in order the request is approved and the applicant is sent a permit via their BAITS account to print.

B Transfer Permit for Animals/ wildlife

Apply In-Person:

  1. An Animal Transit permit is required when transferring Animals/ wildlife that are not domestic from one place to another, such application shall be made out to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP), which is under the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation, and Tourism office. please view the ministry contact details via this Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation, and Tourism Office Location & Contact Details
  2. Those eligible to apply should collect and complete the Animal Transit Application Form, Copies of the Application Form are available for free at the DWNP office, or directly download the form using this Animal Transit Application Form
  3. The application form is duly completed in all respect, and the supporting documentation should be submitted to the nearest DWNP licensing office.
  4. The application shall also be accompanied by a prescribed permit fee and all payments are to be as per the department's preferable payment mode. Fees differ according to the animal products and species as per the Wildlife Act of 1992.
  5. Upon receipt of the application file, the receiving officer will verify if all the necessary information and documentation has been provided and that the applications comply with the selection criteria before registering the file for processing, which is usually within five working days.
  6. Applicants will also be issued with an acknowledgment letter/payment receipt as proof of submission of the application.
  7. After the lapse of the processing period, applicants should visit the DWNP office, where the application was filed to check the outcome.
  8. If approved, the permit will be drawn up, signed, and stamped by the authorized office and made available for withdrawal by the applicant in person at the DWNP dispatch office, where the application was lodged.
  9. The applicant will be required to produce a proof of identity document and acknowledgment letter/payment receipt while collecting the transit Animal License or Permit.

Requirements for Movement Permit for Domestic Animals (cattle)

  • An original and valid Brand Certificate or certified copy
  • Valid Keeper ID Card
  • An import certificate with conditions from the country you are sending your consignment to.


Requirements for Transfer Permit for Animals/ wildlife

  • Duly completed, signed Animal Transit Application Form
  • Animal/Wildlife Import Permit for those who import
  • Animal/Wildlife Export Permit for those who export
  • Certified Copy of National Identity Card (Omang)
  • Certified Copy of Passport
  • Physical Examination report of the Animals to be imported and exported


Requirement for Transit Permit for livestock and livestock products

  • A Transit permit from other transit countries
  • Import permit from the Destination country
  • An export permit from the origin country
  • CITES permit in case of Game animals


For Dogs and Cats

  • Valid rabies immunization record (For dogs and cats)
  • Kittens and puppies under 3 months old (Proof that  the mother (dam) was vaccinated against at least one month but not more than 12 months prior to giving birth
  • Proof that there are no movement restrictions for rabies control in your destination area.
  • Submitted the pets to the office for inspection before issuance of any permit
  • Veterinary Movement permit
  • Veterinary Health certificate or Health card
  • Rabies Certificate

Cattle Movement Permit

  • The applicant must be a registered keeper.
  • The animals to be moved must be registered in BAITS.
  • The animals to be moved/holding they come from should not be under any restrictions
  • The brand certificate should be valid in order for cattle to be moved.
  • A keeper can only request a permit for animals registered to him/her.
  • The movement request must be submitted at least 2 working days before the intended date of movement.
