Apply In-Person

  1. To apply for Adult Passport (age 16 and above), the applicants should visit the Ministry of Nationality, Immigration and Gender Affairs, Department of Immigration and Citizenship, Headquarter or the nearest Regional/District Immigration Offices or the Botswana mission abroad, for the electronic passport application process (contact information provided below).
  2. In the case of parent(s) or guardian(s) applying for an e-passport for persons aged 16 years or younger, bring the child to the office when submitting the application.
  3. Collect and submit the completed “Application for Passport Form” attach the supporting document {as listed below under required document section below} to be verified by the attending staff at the immigration office or Botswana mission abroad.
  4. Pay the processing fee at the immigration/embassy cash office and obtain a payment receipt, and present it to be validated by the immigration staff.
  5. The immigration/embassy staff will then take your biometric data {photograph, fingerprint} and issue you an acknowledgment receipt, which contain details of your application.
  6. All application file will then be forwarded to the department of immigration and citizenship office for processing in Botswana.
  7. Check the outcome of your application, at the office in which the application was made, after five (5) working days (if applied outside Gaborone), within three (3) working days (if applied in Gaborone). If the application was successful collect the Passport against your national identity card and acknowledgement slip.

Required DocumentsEdit

For persons aged sixteen (16) years and above

  • Original and one (1) certified copy of a National Identity card (Omang)
  • Citizenship certificate of parents and/or applicant if parents were once foreign nationals (seek Clarification from Passport and Citizen Officers).
  • National Identity card details for parent(s) as well as details of parent's place of birth.
  • Parent(s) Death Certificate if deceased.
  • Two Current passport size photos.
  • Recommenders ID card copy.
  • For applicants who are adopted, the original adoption certificate, clearance letter from the children’s department, and or, the Court ruling or award.
  • Old passport (physical copy) and for lost passport bring the police report or affidavit before the commissioner of oath. The forms are collected by the applicant or parent if under sixteen (16) years of age.

For new applications the applicable fee in Botswana are:

  • Normal service: P260
  • Express service: P390
  • Special service: P520


Note: if the application is filed abroad, the application fee varies from one consulate/embassy to another; please consult with the nearest Botswana mission for more information.

ValidityEdit

  • The passport is valid for 10 years after the date of issue and renewable thereafter.

Processing TimeEdit

  • If applied within Gaborone the passport takes;
    • Normal service passport takes 3-5 working days to process.
    • Express service passport takes 48 hours to process.
    • Special service passport takes 24 hours to process.
  • If applied outside Gaborone the passport takes; passport takes five (5) working days to process.

Important notes

  • From 8th march 2010, Botswana passports are now e-Passports and will contain a chip that has information such as biometrics and a digital photo. The validity of all Botswana non-electronic passports expired on 31 December 2011
  • It is best to apply for your passport at least 30 days before you plan to travel.
  • The application must be recommended by a citizen of Botswana. The person recommending the applicant must not be an immediate relative.
  • Please note for international travel, passports must be valid for six months or more.
  • This document does not in itself entitle the passport holder entry into another country, nor consular protection while abroad nor any other privileges. However, it does normally allow the passport holder to return to the country where the passport was issued.
  • Rights to consular protection arises from international treaties, while the holder's return to the issuing country depends on the laws prevailing in that country.

  • A passport is a document, issued by the national government. It certifies the identity and nationality of the holder for travel abroad.
  • A passport is needed when applying or a travel visa or work permit.

Requirements for Passport photographs

  • The photographs must be two in number.
  • The photographs must be taken full face without a hat.
  • The photographs must not be mounted.
  • The size of the photographs must not be more than (35*45mm /1.37*1.77in)
  • The photographs must be printed on normal thin photographic paper and must not be glazed on the reverse side.
