Before you submit your application, contact the Marine Resource Section via the contacts provide in the “Office Locations & Contacts” section below to enquire about the necessary documents required according to your research.
Apply by Email:
- Gather all the documents and obtain the marine research application form through the Bermuda Government website or download it directly via this link: Application Form
- Read the application form carefully as you fill it to make sure that you are in line with the stated conditions.
- Save the application form as your surname, month-year of the application and permit at the end. E.g. Michelle04-20permit.
- Submit the application as an email attachment to the Senior Marine Resources Officer through this email address [email protected]. And send the front page with your signature via pdf, fax or post to the Marine Resources Section via the contacts provided below in “Office Locations & Contacts “section.
- Once your application and accompanying documents has been received, it will be forward to the relevant Government of Bermuda officers for comment and you may be asked to modify your research plans based on the outlined comments.
- If the authorities are satisfied with your application, your permit will be processed and you will receive further instructions on how to obtain it through the address you provided.
NOTE: If you require a Convention on International Trade and Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES) permit, you must arrange for inspection with the Government Veterinary Officer via this contact (441) 239-2316 or [email protected] to book an appointment

Processing TimeEdit
- Four weeks from the date of application and if the work involves collection or manipulation of protected species, sampling in protected areas or the use of restricted gear, processing may take longer.

- Please ensure that you are in line with the stated Permit Conditions to avoid misunderstanding.
- If you are planning to take specimens out of Bermuda, you will need an Export permit, in this case a CITES permit is required for specific specimens
- Permits are issued for a maximum of 12 months, but can be renewed annually following receipt of a satisfactory research progress report. Permit renewals will not be processed until a research progress report has been submitted.
- You as the permit holder are responsible for the actions of any person designated to undertake research or collect specimens on your behalf.
