Bermuda - Apply for a Standard Work Permit

Procedure

1. Gather and prepare all the required documents for the application
2. Obtain the Application form from the Immigration department or download it via this link:Form
3. Read the form carefully as it comprises of different sections and forms.
4. Fill in the application form and confirm that you have all the required documents as mentioned in Section 5 of the form.
5. If the work permit falls within a job category where a statutory council must be consulted, print the Referral to Statutory Council Form in Section 7 and have it filled and the medical clearance from in Section 8
6. Pay for the application fees and attach the receipt to the application form.
7. Write an application letter addressed to the Department of Immigration justifying your request and attach the application form alongside the required documents.
8. The ministry will verify your application and with satisfactory results they will grant you the permit

Note that there are several categories of Standard work permit please refer the document in “Information which might help” section below(from section 3.5 to 3.9)

Eligibility

• Employers are permitted to apply for Standard Work Permits for jobs that are in the open, special or restricted category. Applications for Standard Work Permits are not allowed for closed category jobs.

Fees

• One Year Global Work permit: $ 920
• Two Years Global Work Permit: $ 2295
• Three years Global Wok permit: $ 3445
• Four Years Global Work Permit: $ 4570
• Five Years Global Work Permit: $ 5905

Validity

• A Standard Work Permit can be issued with a validity period of 1 up to 5 years.

Instructions

• Employers must advertise the position as per requires by law
• Employers properly consider all those Bermudian, Spouse of Bermudian and PRC holder applicants that meet the minimum standards using reasonable selection practices such as interviews and testing.
  
  

For jobs in the restricted category, in addition to the above, the employer must also:

• apply for a maximum term of year; and
• Submit evidence that any candidates screened and recommended by the Department of Workforce Development (DWD) have been properly considered. DWD is expected to respond to enquiries by employers within 10 working days. Should no response be forthcoming from DWD the application may be submitted with written evidence that enquiries were made.

Need for the Document

• A Standard Work Permit allows all organisations in Bermuda to employ foreign nationals, provided that they can demonstrate that a Bermudian, Spouse of a Bermudian or PRC holder was not suitably qualified or available to be hired.
