ProcedureEdit

Apply In-Person:

  1. Collect and prepare copies of all documents involved with the shipment you are seeking refund.
  2. Obtain form 52 from the custom office, fill it and have it signed by two customs officials.
  3. Write a refund request letter addressed to the collector of customs seeking the fund. NOTE: Your refund request must also include the original Bermuda Customs Declaration (BCD) form and a copy of the customs payment receipt in addition to the new corrected BCD, which will show the duty that should have been paid, if duty was required.
  4. Attach all these documents to the refund application letter and visit the custom house to deliver you application at the reception.
  5. The custom officer will verify your application and forward it for processing.
  6. You will receive either a request for additional information, or a letter of approval, or a letter of denial from a Customs Refund Officer through the address you provided in your application.
  7. If your request is approved, you will obtain the refund one month from the date of the application and if denied, you can re-appeal the decision.


Apply by Mail :

  1. File all the required documents including the refund application letter in a single file and send it to the Collector of Customs through this mail address P.O. Box 2084, Hamilton, HM HX, Bermuda.
  2. Once your application is received, it will be processed and you will receive the customs feedback via the address you have provided.
  3. If your request is approved, you will obtain the refund one month from the date of the application and if denied, you can appeal the decision.

ValidityEdit

  • If you paid duty in error, you must apply within six months of payment. If you are applying for a duty refund in order to give effect to any duty relief, you must apply within 12 months of payment.

InstructionsEdit

  • To get a refund for duty paid in error, you must write a refund application letter addressed to the Collector of Customs requesting a refund of duty paid in error.
  • Make sure that you attach all the required documents to the application to avoid misunderstanding that may lead to your application being denied.
  • When you obtain form 52, ensure that it is signed with two custom officials
  • The request letter should include: Why you require the refund i.e. circumstances surrounding this request, the total value of the goods as well as the duty paid in error and an illustration of the amount you are claiming by showing the calculations.
  • This document package will not be accepted by electronic means (i.e. fax, scan or email). Only a physical hardcopy package will be accepted.
