Procedure

Importing your pets:

1. Have your pet examined by a veterinarian: You will need to have your pet examined by a certified veterinarian. Some of the documents that you will need to present when your pet arrives in Belize will be issued by your vet. Your vet will also be able to provide you information on how you can go about bringing your pet abroad.
2. If you are outside Belize: You may use the link provided under "Office Locations & Contacts" to get in touch with the nearest Embassy/Honorary Consulate of Belize in the country you are currently staying. The office may be able to help you process your request to obtain a pet passport or import permit for your pet.
3. Before you make arrangements to transport your pet: Make sure that you have all the required documents, and got in touch with the authority responsible with the import/export of live animals in the country where your pet will be coming from and in Belize. If you are thinking of flying in with your pet, you may also try and contact the airline company, they may be able to provide additional information about pet passports.
4. Import permit from Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA):
   1. Submit your application to any BAHA office. Where the import permit and conditions of importation are faxed to the port of entry, on behalf of the applicant, the document shall be stamped "pay upon entry". Note: A link is provided under "Documents to Use" section which you can use to download the form.
   2. You must be able to present a valid international veterinary certificate (14 days) and a valid rabies certificate: not less than one month or more than one year prior to the date of importation. You may be asked to present additional documents so it will be wise to get in touch with BAHA first by phone to make sure you have all the required documents.
   3. Dogs and cats less than three months of age are to be confined at home until three months of age, at which time the animal must be vaccinated against rabies and confined for an additional thirty(30) days.
   4. A BAHA veterinary officer or designated officer may inspect animals placed in confinement. This cost is to be borne by importer.
   5. Quarantine inspection at the port of entry is required for all dogs and cats. Dogs and cats coming from countries considered of risk (for example, there is the risk of screwworm in dogs and cats coming from South America) will need to undergo veterinary inspection at the port of entry. There is an additional fee for veterinary inspection.
   6. There is no guarantee that an import permit will be issued upon processing of the application. Before a permit is issued, you may be required to obtain approval from other Ministries, approve establishment/quarantine stations and/or conduct risk analysis including inspection at origin. It will take about a minimum of seven (7) days for your application to be processed.
