ProcedureEdit

  1. The moment you found out that your eID was lost or stolen, you must report the incident immediately. You may file a report with the police of the place where you established the card had been lost or stolen, or with the Registry Office of your principal place of residence.
  2. Contact DOC STOP immediately. You can call the free number 00800 2123 2123 from anywhere in the world 24 hours a day. In countries where this 00800 number is inaccessible, you can call +32 2 518 21 23. Once you have notified the authorities the use of the certificates on your eID is then immediately blocked, rendering your eID unusable for online applications or electronic signatures. To check the status of your eID visit www.checkdoc.be.
    Your identity card is blocked for seven days from the time you report a loss or theft. After these seven days, the local authority will cancel your lost or stolen identity card, rendering it invalid.
    Important: if you find your identity card within seven days, you must notify your local authority immediately. The block on the identity card will then be lifted and the card will be active again. Otherwise your eID will be invalidated and you will have to apply for a new one from the local government offices.
  3. After you have filed a report, you will receive a paper 'proof of notification of loss or destruction' from the Registry Office or the police. This is a legally valid and temporary replacement for your identity card. This document is valid for one month, but the local authority can extend this period. If you experience problems when showing the document, you can contact your local Registry Office. They will confirm the validity of the document.
  4. In case you are going on a journey and have lost your identity card or the card has been stolen, there is an accelerated procedure for getting a new electronic identity card. The accelerated procedure takes two or three days and only applies to countries where a passport or visa is not required. Important: The accelerated procedure is considerably more expensive than the normal procedure.
  5. If you do not have time to use the accelerated procedure, then you can apply for a temporary paper identity card from your local Registry Office. This scheme only applies to countries where a passport or visa is not required. It is issued free of charge by the FPS Home Affairs.
  6. To obtain a temporary identity card, you will need to submit these following documents:
    1. proof of the loss or destruction of your identity card;
    2. a recent passport photo;
    3. an application for a temporary identity card, issued by the Registry Office of the municipality of your principal place of residence.

Note: If you are returning to Belgium from abroad or if your card has expired, you must return the temporary card to the local authority of your principal place of residence.
