Bahamas - Apply for Driver License

Introduction

A driver's license/license or driving license is an official document which states that a person may operate a motorized vehicle. The first phase of the Drivers License Test consist of a Theory Examination. Applicants are tested on their knowledge and ability of the Road Traffic Highway Code, ethics and conduct, as it relates to the rules and regulations of the Road Traffic Act. After successful completion of a theory and practical Driver’s License Test, an initial Bahamian Driver’s License is issued. This license allows the applicant to drive legally on the streets of The Bahamas. There is an option of having your Bahamian Driver’s License valid for one year or three years. However, persons obtaining a Bahamian Driver’s License for the first time can only have their license for a period of one year.

Eligibility

  • First time drivers applying for a driver’s license should have successfully completed the theoretical and practical driving test examinations.
  • Applicant must be 17 years or older
  • Holder of a valid Learner's Permit/Provisional License
  • Passport
  • National Insurance Card
  • Competency with knowledge of Highway Code Manual

Non-Bahamians should present their Passport, Permit to Reside in The Bahamas, issued by The Bahamas Immigration Department via Work Permit, Residency Spouse Certificate or Residency to Reside

  • Applicant must be 17 years or older
  • Applicant must have a valid Provisional License

Instructions

For Non-Bahamians

  • Non-Bahamians should present their Passport, Permit to Reside in The Bahamas, issued by The Bahamas Immigration Department via Work Permit, Residency Spouse Certificate or Residency to Reside
  • Applicant must be 17 years or older
  • Applicant must have a valid Provisional Licence
  • Applicant must present Provisional Licence, Passport and National Insurance Card to the Road Traffic Department Examination Unit to make an appointment for the examination
  • Clerk processing applicants for appointment will verify the relevant information
  • Applicant will pay a fee of $10.00
  • Clerk will make appointment and issue an appointment card which will indicate the date and time for the examination
  • A copy of the Highway Code Manual can be obtained from The Road Traffic Department, Clarence Bain Building.
  • Applicant should appear to the Examination Unit, Munnings Building, Thompson Boulevard, on appointment date indicated.
  • Duration for the examination is one hour
  • Results will be available two working days after examination

  • Telephone Number

Procedure

  1. Applicant must present a Passport and a National Insurance Card to the Road Traffic Department Drivers License Unit.
  2. Clerk will verify all relevant information.
  3. Upon verification of the relevant information, the Photo Clerk will take the photograph and signature of the applicant.
  4. Photo Clerk will issue a to the applicant for payment.
  5. Upon payment to the cashier, the Drivers License Clerk will issue the Drivers License.

Fees

$10:00 (ten dollars)

Validity

If you got a driver's license for the first time, you must renew your license after a year.

When you renew your license, you are given an option of having your Bahamian Drivers Licence renewed for one year or three years.

Processing Time

Once all the requirements are met, the License can be issued on the same day that you visit the Examination Unit of the Road Traffic Department.
