Armenia - Getting Married
ProcedureEdit
It is a tradition that groom must ask the bride's family for the bride's hand. Armenian do it by holding a meeting of members of both bridess and groom's family.
The engagement reception is almost the same as the actual wedding reception. The thing that differs them is the fact that the engagement reception does not include the religious ceremony. But there is a priest present. He blesses the engagement rings and the couples plans for marriage.
A person who wishes to marry an Armenian citizen must complete a form (in English and Armenian) stating that he/she is legally free to marry. A Consular Officer must notarize this form. The fee is USD 50 or the equivalent in Armenian dram, payable at the Consular Section.
After the forms are notarized, they must be presented to the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for authentication. The Ministry is located on Republic Square, across from the Marriott Hotel (please use the entrance on Amiryan St. for marriage letter services). The marriage must then be registered by the Civil Acts Registration Agency (also known as ZAGS) at the Ministry of Justice. When going to the Civil Acts Registration Agency, the Armenian spouse must submit a similar document from his/her local Civil Acts Registration Agency office stating that he/she is free to marry. OthersEdit
Foreigners must apply for official permission from the Armenian government to marry a citizen of Armenia. You must demonstrate to Armenian officials that they are not currently married to anyone else - either you have never been married or all divorces are finalized - that your identity is proven, and that you have never committed any crimes in Armenia. This is done by providing various documents including an Affidavit of Single Status to the Armenian government either in Armenia or via an Armenian embassy.
