ProcedureEdit
Apply In Person
- To Apply for a Pilot License (Certificate), the applicant has to approach the U.S. DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION, Federal Aviation Administration link
- Decide which type of pilot license you want to pursue. The most common options include private pilot license (PPL), commercial pilot license (CPL), and airline transport pilot license (ATPL).
- If you are new to aviation, you will first need to obtain a student pilot certificate. To do so, you must be at least 16 years old and pass a medical examination conducted by an FAA-designated aviation medical examiner.
- Enroll in a flight school or find a flight instructor to receive the necessary flight training. The flight training requirements vary depending on the type of pilot license you are seeking. The FAA sets minimum flight hours, training maneuvers, and knowledge areas that you must complete.
- Study the appropriate FAA publications and prepare for the written knowledge test. The knowledge test covers aviation regulations, procedures, navigation, aerodynamics, and other relevant topics. Schedule an appointment at an FAA-approved testing center to take the exam.
- After completing the required flight training and passing the knowledge test, you will need to take a practical test (also known as a check-ride).
- This test consists of an oral examination and a flight examination conducted by an FAA-designated examiner.
- The examiner will assess your knowledge, skills, and ability to operate an aircraft safely.
- Once the applicant completes the practical test successfully, the applicant has to visit the nearest office.
- An application form will be provided to the applicant by the concerned officer.
- The applicant has to fill in all the necessary details in the application form. (Incomplete applications are not accepted)
- Make sure that the applicant has attached all the necessary documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
- The applicant has to attach the photocopies of the required documents along with the application form while submitting.
- Submit the application form and the documents to the authorized officer.
- The applicant has to pay the prescribed fee as requested by the authority.
- After receiving the application, the concerned authority will check the submitted application and document set. If all are in place, the application will be accepted.
- As part of the application process, the applicant will need to undergo a background check and fingerprinting. This is to ensure compliance with aviation security regulations.
- Then the application will be processed further. All the updates on the application status will be sent via SMS to the applicant’s mobile number or through email.
- The TSA (Transportation Security Administration) conducts a background check on all pilot license applicants. You will need to provide the necessary information and comply with the TSA's security requirements.
- Once the process gets completed, the applicant gets a call from the office regarding the application.
- If your application is approved, the FAA will issue your pilot license or certificate. The license will be mailed to you, and it will serve as evidence of your qualifications to operate an aircraft.
- This entire process can be completed within 4 – 5 weeks or as per the timeline advised by the respective department authority.
