Apply In Person

  1. To Apply for Hazardous Materials Instructor Training (HMIT) Grants, the applicant has to approach the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration office link
  2. An application form will be provided to the applicant by the authority officer.
  3. The applicant has to enter all the necessary details in the application form.
  4. The applicant has to make sure to attach all the necessary documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  5. The applicant has to attach the photocopies of the required documents along with the application form while submitting.
  6. Submit the application form and the documents to the authority officer.
  7. PHMSA reviews and evaluates applications to make certain the proposed activities support the program mission to ensure the safe transportation of hazmat.
  8. If approved, PHMSA offers the agency a Notice of Grant Award (NGA) for acceptance and signature.
  9. Once executed, the agency may distribute grant funds in accordance with the planned activities identified in the grant application within the State, Territory, or Tribe to Local Emergency Planning Committees (LEPCs) and first responder organizations.
  10. The fee for this procedure has to be paid as per the authority’s request.
  11. The processing time of the procedure takes up to 1 to 3 months.

EligibilityEdit

The HMIT grant is competitively awarded to non-profit organizations that satisfy both of the following eligibility requirements:

  • Expertise in conducting hazmat employee training programs and
  • Capable of reaching a target population of hazmat employees and including them in the training program.
