Graduated Instruction Permit

The teen and parent must provide necessary application documents to apply for a graduated instruction permit. The applicant must pass written and vision tests.

  1. Complete this online form. The information from your online application will be electronically transmitted by secure connection and stored for use when you visit an MVD or authorized third-party office.
  2. Determine your identification requirements.
  3. Print the completed package and go to an MVD or authorized third-party office, bringing with you all the required documents you will be submitting/presenting when you apply.
  4. Pay all applicable fees.

Note: After obtaining a graduated instruction permit the teen must have a licensed driver who is at least 21 years of age seated in the front seat next to him or her at all times.


Graduated Driver License

  1. Gather all documents you will need to present or submit to obtain a Class G License.
  2. Complete the application form.
  3. Submit all required forms and documents, and pay all applicable fees.


  • A teen with a graduated driver license cannot drive between the hours of midnight to 5 a.m. for the first six months unless one of these conditions is met:
    • A parent or legal guardian who has a valid driver license is sitting in the front passenger seat.
    • The teen is driving to or from a sanctioned school sponsored activity, sanctioned religious activity, place of employment or family emergency.
  • A teen with a Graduated Driver License shall not drive a motor vehicle containing more than one passenger under the age of 18 on a public highway unless one of these conditions is met:
    • The passengers are the teen driver's siblings.
    • The teen driver is accompanied by a parent or legal guardian with a valid driver license who occupies the front passenger seat.


Note: If the teen driver has no outstanding extensions of the restricted driving period or suspension of driving privileges during the completion of the first six months of restricted driving, the teen may drive without restriction until eligible to apply for a Class D driver license beginning at age 18.

EligibilityEdit

Graduated Instruction Permit

  • The teen must be at least 15 years and 6 months old.


Graduated Driver License

  • The teen must be at least 16 years old.
  • The teen must hold an Arizona class G permit for at least six months.
  • The teen must have completed 20 hours of supervised, behind-the-wheel daytime driving practice and 10 hours of supervised, behind the wheel nighttime driving practice a total of 30 hours before applying for graduated driver license.



FeesEdit

  • Ages 16-39: $25.00
  • Ages 40-44: $20.00
  • Ages 45-49: $15.00
  • Age 50 and older and five-year: $10.00
  • Limited license: $10.00


Payment may be made by cash, check, travelers check or money order (payable to Motor Vehicle Division) for most fees; credit cards may be used at some offices. Returned check and reinstatement fees may not be paid by check.

A parent or legal guardian is required to assist a teen driver in applying for and earning a Graduated Driver License.

If you hold a current and valid out-of-state driver license, you are exempt from the driver education/driving practice and instruction permit requirements.
