ProcedureEdit

  1. To apply for a Private Driver's License, you will need to submit an application to the Department of Public Safety (office address provided below). Forms are available at the office.
  2. For a list of required documents you will need to submit to the Department, call the office first (contact number is also provided below).
  3. You will need to take and pass the written and practical driving test before you are issued a driving license.
  4. The driver’s license indicates the type or general class of vehicles you may drive. Make sure to sign your license after receiving it. Note: No license may be valid until it has been signed by the licensee.

Driver's License Fees:

  • 3-year motor vehicle Private driver license: $12.00
  • Renewal of Private driver license: $12.00
  • Duplicate Private driver license: $6.00

ValidityEdit

All private drivers licenses shall expire 3 years from the date of issue.

A driver's license will not be valid until it has been signed by the licensee.

A license is renewable on or before its expiration upon application, payment of the required fee, and satisfactory completion of examinations as may be required by the Commissioner.

A license shall be issued to a person only under the name of that person as shown on his social security card.


Note: Commissioner means the Commissioner of Public Safety in American Samoa.

There are only 2 types of drivers licenses issued in American Samoa: a provisional drivers license and a private drivers license.

A learners permit is considered a drivers license for purpose of authorizing a person to operate a motor vehicle in American Samoa.

A driving license is an official document which states that a person may operate a motorized vehicle, such as a motorcycle, car, truck or a bus, on a public roadway.

You may not operate any motor vehicle in American Samoa without a valid drivers license issued by the Commissioner of Public Safety in American Samoa.

You must have a drivers license or learners permit in your immediate possession at all times whenever you are operating a motor vehicle and shall display the same upon demand of a police officer.
