Algeria - Apply for Registration and Licensing to Practice Nursing (Midwife)

For a nurse/midwife to practice in Algeria he or she should be registered and licensed with the Ministry of Health, Population, and Hospital Reform. It is the responsibility of the Ministry to ensure that all nurses/midwifery that are within its jurisdiction meet a certain level of competence before starting their practice. Thus, licensing examination and clinical placement are administered to the health practitioner to ascertain that the applicant meets all qualifications before being registered and issued a practicing license.
Apply In Person:
Registration for Student (Locally Trained Nurse)
- Nurses/midwives who wish to be entered into the Ministry Nursing/midwife roll/register are required to show that they have attained the required competency by Ministry standards.
- Applicants should refer to the “Eligibility” section of this page to confirm eligibility and contact the Ministry to begin the registration process.
- Applicants collect all relevant application forms to be completed for Registration and Licensing to Practice Nursing/midwife with respect to the requirement from the relevant department.
- Carefully complete the forms with appropriate information under relevant sections. But don’t forget to attest the forms with your signature once completed.
- Once completed, attach all the documents listed in the “Required Documents” section before submitting the complete registration dossier to the Ministry Registry office. Don’t forget to make the stipulated payment as directed by the officials.
- Upon receipt of the complete registration dossier, the Registrar will check the documents for completeness and authenticity. If everything is in order he shall forward all applications to the registration Committee for examination and verification processes.
- Once the application is reviewed and approved by the Committee, the applicant will be informed and requested to make payment for the Registration/Licensing fees which are dependents on the category of the nurse.
- The committee shall, in the case of refusal of registration, give a reasoned decision and inform the applicant of his right of appeal.
- The applicant will be notified to collect his Registration Certificates, Practicing license, and a Continuous Professional Development logbook, via text or phone call. One is required to bring proof of identification when collecting the documents.
Registration of Foreign-Trained Nurses and Midwives
- Where the applicant has studied or worked abroad (Citizen/ foreigner) and wishes to be entered into the Ministry Nursing/midwife roll/register he/she is required to show that they have attained the required competency by Ministry standards. Applicants should refer to the “Eligibility” section of this page to confirm eligibility and contact the Ministry to begin the registration process.
- Upon receipt of the complete registration dossier as listed under the “Required Documents” section below, the Registrar will check the documents for completeness and authenticity. If everything is in the order he shall forward all applications to the department responsible. which shall then verify the applicant's qualifications with the relevant training school and board of nursing/midwifery from the respective country.
- Please note that the application shall also be accompanied by all applicable fees and should be deposited as prescribed and proof of payment shared with the ministry office.
- Upon being satisfied with the information provided by the respective institution, candidates will be shortlisted and invited for an oral interview by the Registration and Licensing Committee. Based on the results of the oral interview, successful candidates may be invited to sit a written exam or proceed for a clinical placement to acquaint themselves with healthcare systems in Algeria for a period to be determined.
- Upon passing the exams, the applicant will be required to undergo a practical orientation program (clinical placement) in a Teaching, Regional, or any hospital accredited by the Ministry of Health/Council to acquaint themselves with healthcare systems in Algeria.
- The Health Profession will be registered as a provisional Nurse/ midwife with the Council Registrar and will be issued a Provisional Registration Certificate, practicing license, Badge, and a Continuous Professional Development logbook.
- The applicant will be notified to collect Authorization documents via text or phone call. One is required to bring proof of identification when collecting the documents.
- The foreign Nurses/midwives will be required to serve Mandatory services for years. After years of satisfactory service in Algeria, they are transferred from the Provisional register to the Main register.

EligibilityEdit
Applicants should meet the following criteria to be eligible:
- To be of good reputation and commendable conduct.
- To have never been sentenced in a felony or misdemeanor (for a custodial penalty in a crime involving moral turpitude or breach of trust, unless rehabilitated in either case). In short, not to have a criminal record.
- To have attained one of the following academic degrees:
- A Bachelor of Science in Nursing from one of Algeria’s high institutes, or an equivalent degree elsewhere than in Algeria, which the Ministry recognizes as equivalent to the qualification by examination required by the ministry.
- A Diploma from a healthcare institute affiliated with the Ministry of Health (nursing division) or an equivalent degree.

ValidityEdit
- The validity of the registration certificate shall be mentioned on the document; while the practice license shall be subjected to renewal and payment of an annual practice fee as may be prescribed by the Ministry Office, this should be submitted on time before the lapse of the current practice license, to allow enough time for the renewal due process to be completed.
