- To Apply for Optometrist License, the applicant has to approach the Canadian Association of Optometrists link
- Complete a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from an accredited optometry program. Ensure that your program meets the educational standards set by the regulatory body or college governing optometry in your desired province or territory.
- Complete the required clinical training as specified by the regulatory body or college. This typically involves completing a specified number of supervised clinical hours in various optometric settings.
- Clear the national board exams, such as the Canadian Assessment of Competence in Optometry (CACO) or the Optometry Examining Board of Canada (OEBC) exams. These exams assess your knowledge and competency in optometry.
- An application form will be provided to the applicant by the concerned officer.
- The applicant has to fill in all the necessary details in the application form. (Incomplete applications are not accepted)
- Make sure that the applicant has attached all the necessary documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
- The applicant has to attach the photocopies of the required documents along with the application form while submitting.
- Submit all the documents with the completed form to the concerned officer.
- The applicant has to pay the prescribed fee as requested by the authority.
- After receiving the application, the concerned authority will check the submitted application and document set. If all are in place, the application will be accepted.
- Undergo a criminal record check or provide a criminal record clearance certificate, as required by the regulatory body or college. This is to ensure that you have a clean criminal record and meet the standards of professional conduct and safety.
- Obtain professional liability insurance coverage or provide proof of coverage. This insurance protects you and your patients in case of any professional negligence or liability claims.
- Then the application will be processed further. All the updates on the application status will be sent via SMS to the applicant’s mobile number.
- Once the process gets completed, the applicant gets a call from the office regarding the application.
- If your application is approved, you will receive your Optometrist License from the regulatory body or college. This license allows you to practice as a licensed optometrist in the province or territory where you are licensed.
- This entire process can be completed within 3 – 4 weeks or as per the timeline advised by the respective department authority.
