Apply In-Person:

  1. To Apply for Tax Paid Transfer and Registration of Firearms, the applicant has to approach the National Firearms Act Division Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.   2. An application form is available at the following Link
  3. The applicant has to fill-in all the details in the form.
  4. Applicant should make sure to attach all the documents that are mentioned under the “Required Documents” section of this page (Both photocopies and originals).
  5. Submit the application along with the required document to the appropriate office.
  6. Address is mentioned in “Office Locations & Contacts” of this page.
  7. The fee of this procedure is mentioned under the “Fees” section of this page.
  8. After an application is granted, the NFA Division will provide an approved copy to the transferor, together with the firearm, for delivery to the transferee.
  9. Because the application's approval registers the handgun with the transferee, the actual transfer of the firearm must be conducted right away; nevertheless, the transferor must not transfer the firearm until the application has been granted and received.
  10. The transferor must contact the NFA Division with the specifics if the physical transfer of the firearm cannot be conducted immediately.

  • Photocopies or a computer-generated version of the ATF Form 3 are both acceptable.
  • If more than one firearm of the same description is being transferred, but the serial numbers are not consecutive, the registrant should write "see attached list of xxx serial numbers" in item 3g.ATF Form 3 must be mentioned in any attachment.

Need for the DocumentEdit

  • Any person wishing to transfer a firearm that is exempt from taxation must fill out a separate application on this form in duplicate.
  • The transferor must include all of the requested information on this application form.



Information which might helpEdit

  • Any firearm used in a violation of the NFA will be confiscated and forfeited.
  • It is illegal for anybody to create or cause the making of a false entry on any NFA-required application or record, knowing that the entry is false.



Other uses of the Document/CertificateEdit

  • The certificate's details will be used to apply for a tax-free transfer of firearms from one Federal firearms licensee and special (occupational) taxpayer qualified to deal in NFA firearms to another qualified special taxpayer.
  • The information is used to ensure that firearm transfers and registrations are legal.
