ProcedureEdit

  1. To apply for a motor-driven cycle license or a motorcycle license you must study the material found in the Alabama Motorcycle Operator Manual. You can pick one up at any DPS station, State Trooper Office, or Probate Judge or License Commissioner Office.
  2. Go to your local Department of Public Safety (DPS) office.
  3. Complete and submit an application form along with all other required documents.
  4. Take the written knowledge exam.
  5. Take the on-cycle skills test. This test will be conducted either on a controlled course or in an actual traffic environment. Applicants will need to show their abilities with basic control skills, hand signals, safe acceleration and braking, traffic awareness, and other critical components of the motorcycle riding experience.   6. Pay all necessary fees.

Motor-Driven Cycle License (ages 14 and 15):

  • U.S. birth certificate (certified and issued by the Bureau of Vital Statistics (No Photocopies), or Alabama non-driver identification card or Alabama vessel license.
  • Social Security card *
  • Third form of identification from secondary list (if other identification is nonphoto).
  • Fifteen-year-old applicants must have acceptable proof of school enrollment or graduation. **

  • Social Security card (original).
  • Certified letter on letterhead from the Social Security Administration stating applicants name and number.
  • U.S. military identification card.
  • U.S. military form DD 214.
  • Medicare/Medicaid identification card (if Social Security number is followed by the letter A).
  • W2 tax form.

School Enrollment Documents **

  • Form DL1/93.
  • Certificate of graduation.
  • GED certificate.
  • Certified letter from school officials stating student is enrolled.

InstructionsEdit

Alabama DPS recognizes two classes of engine-equipped cycles?motor-driven cycles and motorcycles.

A motor-driven cycle is defined as any motorcycle or motor scooter that has:

  • A motor that produces no more than five brake horsepower (hp).
  • An engine size of 150 cubic centimeters (cc) or less.
  • A weight of less than 200 pounds when fully equipped.

A motorcycle is defined as being:

  • A motor vehicle having a seat or saddle for the use of the rider.
  • Designed to travel on not more than three wheels in contact with the ground, excluding a tractor.

Motorcycle License Riding Restrictions

  • Riders 14 and 15 Years Old
Applicants will receive receive a Class M license with a "B" restriction. This restriction indicates that holders may only operate a motor-driven cycle. License holders who turns 16 years old, will become eligible to take the exams for an unrestricted Class M motorcycle license.
  • Riders 16 Years and Older
If you're aged 16 years old or older and have met the requirements and passed the tests, you'll be issued an unrestricted Class M drivers license. This license allows you to legally operate either a motorcycle or a motor-driven cycle.
