Step – 1 Course

  1. Before applying for Marriage and Family Therapist License, the applicant has to complete the Master's or Doctoral degree in Marriage and Family Therapy or a closely related field from an accredited educational institution.
  2. Also, the applicant needs to get an experience in the field.
  3. Complete the required number of supervised hours. Most states require several thousand hours of supervised experience under the guidance of a licensed.


Step – 2 Examination

  1. The Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards (AMFTRB) administers the national MFT exam.
  2. The applicant must pass this exam to demonstrate your knowledge and competency in the field.
  3. To register for the examination, the applicant has to make the application online via link
  4. Select the examination and select the window.
  5. And enter all the details in the application form.
  6. Finally enter the captcha code and click the “Submit” button.


Step – 3

  1. The applicant can check the examination date from the following link
  2. The applicant has to complete the exam successfully to demonstrate his/her knowledge and competency in the field.


Step - 4

  1. After completing the exam successfully, the applicant has to get a license from the state office. link
  2. An application form will be provided to the applicant by the concerned branch officer. or it can be downloaded from the following link
  3. The applicant has to fill in all the necessary details in the application form. (Incomplete applications are not accepted)
  4. Make sure that the applicant has attached all the necessary documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  5. The applicant has to attach the photocopies of the required documents along with the application form while submitting.
  6. Submit all the documents with the completed form to the concerned officer.
  7. The applicant has to pay the prescribed fee as requested by the authority.
  8. After receiving the application, the concerned authority will check the submitted application and document set. If all are in place, the application will be accepted.
  9. Then the application will be processed further. All the updates on the application status will be sent via SMS to the applicant’s mobile number.
  10. Once the process gets completed, the applicant gets a call from the office regarding the application.
  11. The applicant will get the license through the mail.
  12. This entire process can be completed within 30 - 40 days or as per the timeline advised by the respective department authority.
