Apply In-Person:
- The applicant has to reach out to Drug Enforcement Administration office or by writing for the application. Contact details are mentioned in “Office Locations & Contacts” of this page. Or here is the Contact Link
- An application form is also available at the following 225 Link
- The applicant should make sure to carry all the documents that are mentioned under the “Required Documents” section of this page (Both photocopies and originals).
- Applicant has to fill in all the necessary details in the form and attach the photocopies of the documents that are needed along with the application form before submitting.
- The fee for this procedure has been mentioned under the “Fees” section of this page.
- A DEA Investigator will contact the applicant once the application has been filed. The investigator will provide the applicant a list of questions to answer and then set up a meeting or visit with the applicant to approve the applicant CS.
- New applications are processed within 6 to 8 weeks.
- Applicants can verify the status of their application by calling the DEA at 1-800-882-9539, or they can contact their local DEA Field Office if they have any queries.
- DEA investigator’s, DEA Registrant, and EH&S CS personnel will meet online or at the location.
- After the approval, DEA registration will be granted.

- Go to “Registration” → “Applications” → “New Applications Online”.
- Applicant must provide all information necessary for application procedure online.
- Applicant should make sure to upload digital copies of documents (whichever is necessary) along with the application form.
- Complete the online DEA Registration Form 224 or 225.
- Notify EH&S at [email protected] for DEA appointment time and schedule a preview of storage site.
- DEA investigator’s, DEA Registrant, and EH&S CS personnel will meet online or at the location.

EligibilityEdit
- If their research proposals fall into one of the following categories, Principal Investigators must obtain permission from the Research Advisory Panel of California (RAPC) on their own:
- Any research involving Schedule I controlled substances, whether human or non-human.
- Any Schedule I or Schedule II controlled substance in academic human research.
- Research on any substance, scheduled or not, for the treatment of drug addiction or abuse.
- Protocols for analysing or comparing any Schedule II controlled substance in clinical trials.
FeesEdit
- Fee amount has been mentioned in the application respectively.
- Make checks payable to "Drug Enforcement Administration". Third-party checks or checks drawn on foreign banks will not be accepted. Fees Are Non-Refundable.
ValidityEdit
- Form 224 – Practitioner; Mid-Level Practitioner; Pharmacy: Valid for three years.
- Form 225 – Researcher; Analytical Lab: Valid for one year.

- Prior to enrolling in the necessary USC EH&S Controlled Substance Use Authorization (CSUA) Program, each Principal Investigator (PI) who intends to conduct research using controlled substances must obtain a DEA registration.
