Procedure

To register your relationship, you need to:

• Read the guidelines on the notice of intended marriage.
• Complete the notice of intended marriage form.
• Provide your birth certificates or passports.
• Supply divorce or previous spouse death certificate(s).

Remember to:

• Lodge your notice of intended marriage form at least 1 month before getting married.
• Provide any divorce and previous spouse death certificates to the celebrant (if applicable).
• Apply and pay for a marriage certificate (if you want an official document to prove your marriage).
• Translate documents in other languages into English.

Eligibility

In Akrotiri, you must register your marriage. Your celebrant is responsible for lodging your registration on your behalf.

The Registrar needs to see documents that prove your age, nationality and identity. If you were born in Akrotiri, provide your full birth certificate (long version) and passport.

If you were born outside Akrotiri, provide the certified copy of your birth issued by the appropriate authority of that country and your passport or national identity card.

Area Offices of Akrotiri Issues birth and death certificates for civilian residents of the SBAs, conducting civil marriages and issuing marriage licenses for military personnel, UK-based civilians and their dependents.

The Administrative Secretary shall register all certificates of marriage filed in his office in such order and manner as he thinks most convenient for easy reference thereto.

Need for the Document

Immediately upon the celebration of a marriage, a certificate in duplicate, , shall be signed by the Registered Minister or Marriage Officer who celebrates the marriage, and by the parties to the marriage, and by two or more witnesses to the same, one of which certificates shall be delivered to the parties to the marriage, and the other shall, within seven days thereafter, be transmitted by the Registered Minister or Marriage Officer to the Administrative Secretary, who shall file and record the same in his office.

After the marriage has been registered, you can obtain a copy of the marriage certificate from the Registrar on payment of the appropriate fee.

A Certificate of Marriage provides proof of marriage, social security and is useful in obtaining visas for spouses to travel together.

Couples marrying by religious ceremony should ensure that the schedule is returned to the Registrar within three days, either in person or by post.

The schedule should be signed by the couple, two witnesses and the Officiant after the ceremony.

If you do not return the marriage schedule you will be unable to obtain a certified copy of your marriage.
