ProcedureEdit

Apply In Person:

  1. To Obtain a Police Clearance Certificate, the applicant has to approach the Sovereign Base Areas Administration SBA Police Station Akrotiri – link
  2. The applicant has to visit the office with the request letter.
  3. An application form will be provided to the applicant by the concerned officer.
  4. The applicant has to fill in all the necessary details in the application form. (Incomplete applications are not accepted)
  5. Make sure that the applicant has attached all the necessary documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  6. The applicant has to attach the photocopies of the required documents along with the application form while submitting.
  7. Submit all the documents with the completed form to the concerned officer.
  8. The applicant has to pay the prescribed fee as requested by the authority.
  9. After receiving the application, the concerned authority will check the submitted application and document set. If all are in place, the application will be accepted.
  10. An acknowledgment receipt will be provided. Please save it for future reference.
  11. Then the application will be processed further. All the updates on the application status will be sent via SMS to the applicant’s mobile number.
  12. Once the process gets completed, the applicant gets a call from the office regarding the application.
  13. The applicant has to visit the office to get the clearance certificate.
  14. This entire process can be completed within 15-20 days or as per the timeline advised by the respective department authority.

It can be applied by:

  • Individuals and authorized personnel only.
  • Third party representation is given only to close family members or friends.
  • Anyone who has lived in Akrotiri for any length of time, regardless of nationality.


FeesEdit

Payment can only be made by cheque, bankers draft, bank transfer or Postal Order. Your payment must be in Pounds Sterling (No other payee details will be accepted). You can arrange for someone else to pay the fee for you if necessary.

ValidityEdit

There is no set period of time for which the Police Certificate is considered to be valid. The Police Certificate is only truly accurate on the date of issue. Embassies or High Commissions will usually require you to produce a Police Certificate which has been issued less than six (6) months before your visa interview.

InstructionsEdit

Applicants need to apply to their local regional Police Force where they used to live for a certificate.

The Sovereign Base Areas have their own Police Force who have primary jurisdiction over all criminal offences committed in the SBAs.

The SBA police operate to UK standards wherever practicable and in this regard training and development is often provided directly by officers and teams from UK forces.

If you live inside or outside the United Kingdom, you must apply through the Criminal Records Office of the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO).

Need for the DocumentEdit

Police Certificates only contain information relating to the applicant. Please note that the certificate may also include foreign criminal history information where it has been disclosed.

The Police Certificate provided by ACRO covers the whole of the United Kingdom. Applicants who have lived abroad may be required to provide evidence of good character, or to disclose their previous criminal history in that other country. Advice should be sought from the relevant Embassy, High Commission, Consulate or other organization that is requesting a Police Certificate.

Proof of current address

Proofs of address can be anything official that has reached you at your current address and bears your name. We accept copies of documents from "official bodies" e.g. bank statements, letters from a GP, letters from a school or college, utility bills, phone bills etc. Ideally they should be for different months and in either case should not be more than six months old.

If you do not have proof of your current address, the following can be accepted:

Two proofs of the address in the name of the householder dated within the last 6 months, together with a letter written by the householder confirming that you have no proofs in your own name but that you reside with them.

Or two documents taken from the following list, which have been issued within the last 6 months:

  • A letter from your employer, on company headed paper confirming your current address as per their records.
  • A tenancy agreement, rent payment receipts or a letter from a letting agent confirming your current address.
  • A driving license, ID card or passport page showing your current address.
  • A letter from your bank on headed paper confirming your current address as per their records.


Other uses of the Document/CertificateEdit

The certificate details whether or not the applicant has a criminal record and is required as part of the visa process by the respective High Commission or Embassy.

The Sovereign Base Areas cover approximately 98 square miles of land surface and they are located in the south coast of the island of Cyprus. The Akrotiri Base (Western SBA) covers 47.5 square miles whilst, some 60 miles to the east, the Dhekelia Base (Eastern SBA) covers 50.5 square miles and contains three Republican enclaves. WSBA abuts the Republic of Cyprus, whereas ESBA additionally abuts the north of the island and the United Nations buffer zone. The territory of the Republic of Cyprus separates the two parts of the Sovereign Base Areas.

The SBA have their own Police Force who have primary jurisdiction over all criminal offences committed in the SBAs.

Although funded totally by the Ministry of Defence, the SBA Police are an independent Police Service with jurisdiction under Sovereign Base Areas law and are not connected with the Ministry of Defence Police.

The SBA police operate to UK standards wherever practicable and in this regard training and development is often provided directly by officers and teams from UK forces. The following departments and units exist within the force.
