Akrotiri - Obtain Copy of Marriage Certificate

By taking your application form to the General Register Office. The office is open Monday to Friday from 9.30 am to 4.00 pm (excluding public, bank and all Northern Ireland government holidays). Please note that the office opens at 10.00 am on the first Tuesday of each month due to staff training.
In addition to the General Register Office, some certificates are available from local District Registration offices.
Applications to District Registration Offices must be submitted in person, please contact your local office for details of accepted payment methods.

After the marriage has been registered, you can obtain a copy of the marriage certificate from the Registrar on payment of the appropriate fee.
Couples who are married at a religious ceremony will not be able to obtain a marriage certificate immediately after the ceremony.
Before you can get a marriage certificate, a marriage needs to be registered. The official who performed the marriage will do this by sending a complete and signed marriage license to the Area Office Akrotiri.

Area Offices of Akrotiri Issues birth and death certificates for civilian residents of the SBAs, conducting civil marriages and issuing marriage licenses for military personnel, UK-based civilians and their dependents.
Marriage officer will verify the contents of the application and records. He will issue a Certificate of Marriage if he is satisfied that the records produced are in accordance with the law.

Need for the DocumentEdit
A marriage certificate is a document containing the details of a marriage performed in Akrotiri. You can order a copy or multiple copies if the marriage is registered in Akrotiri. You can use this certificate to change your name, process a divorce, or as a record of family history.
The Registrar is responsible for the registration of all marriages - civil and religious.
A marriage or civil partnership certificate can be ordered from the General Register Office.

Area Offices act as the civil government of the two Sovereign Base Areas and are an integral part of the Sovereign Base Areas Administration. Each Sovereign Base Area has its own Area Office, i.e. the Area Office Akrotiri, for the Sovereign Base Area of Akrotiri (WSBA) and the Area Office Dhekelia, for the Sovereign Base Area of Dhekelia (ESBA).
Before a Marriage Officer issues any certificate the person applying for the certificate to the intended marriage shall appear personally before him, and before the Governor grants any special license, each of the parties to the intended marriage shall appear personally before such person as the Governor shall appoint for that purpose, and in either case make a declaration on oath or solemn affirmation (which the Marriage Officer and every person appointed by the Governor to take such declaration is hereby empowered to administer or receive) that he or she knows of no impediment or lawful hindrance to the marriage, and either that the consent of the parties required by the Law to consent to the marriage has been obtained, or that no such consent is required. Every such declaration shrill be reduced to writing and be signed by the person making it.
Other uses of the Document/CertificateEdit
- A Certificate of Marriage provides proof of marriage, social security and is useful in obtaining visas for spouses to travel together.
- A marriage certificate is a record of a marriage. It lists the date and place of the marriage, and names of the people who were married.

Any person who willfully makes or inserts any false statement in any declaration, certificate or other document required by the Law to be made or issued, shall be liable to imprisonment for any term not exceeding two years.
Any Registered Minister or Marriage Officer who willfully celebrates a marriage contrary to any of the provisions of the law, or knowing that any provision of this Law has not been complied with, shall be liable to imprisonment for any term not exceeding two years.
