Introduction

A marriage certificate is a document containing the details of a marriage performed in Akrotiri. You can order a copy or multiple copies if the marriage is registered in Akrotiri. You can use this certificate to change your name, process a divorce, or as a record of family history.

The Registrar is responsible for the registration of all marriages - civil and religious.

A marriage or civil partnership certificate can be ordered from the General Register Office.

Eligibility

After the marriage has been registered, you can obtain a copy of the marriage certificate from the Registrar on payment of the appropriate fee.

Couples who are married at a religious ceremony will not be able to obtain a marriage certificate immediately after the ceremony.

Before you can get a marriage certificate, a marriage needs to be registered. The official who performed the marriage will do this by sending a complete and signed marriage license to the Area Office Akrotiri.

Information which might help

Area Offices act as the civil government of the two Sovereign Base Areas and are an integral part of the Sovereign Base Areas Administration. Each Sovereign Base Area has its own Area Office, i.e. the Area Office Akrotiri, for the Sovereign Base Area of Akrotiri (WSBA) and the Area Office Dhekelia, for the Sovereign Base Area of Dhekelia (ESBA).

Before a Marriage Officer issues any certificate the person applying for the certificate to the intended marriage shall appear personally before him, and before the Governor grants any special license, each of the parties to the intended marriage shall appear personally before such person as the Governor shall appoint for that purpose, and in either case make a declaration on oath or solemn affirmation (which the Marriage Officer and every person appointed by the Governor to take such declaration is hereby empowered to administer or receive) that he or she knows of no impediment or lawful hindrance to the marriage, and either that the consent of the parties required by the Law to consent to the marriage has been obtained, or that no such consent is required. Every such declaration shrill be reduced to writing and be signed by the person making it.
