ProcedureEdit

A party to a marriage, or a person with written authorization by the couple, can order a marriage certificate. You can make application for a marriage certificate:

  • in person at any Vital Statistics office,
    • Married couple must write a signed letter to the consular section to declare that they are married.
    • Physical Appearance of either husband and wife, in addition to 3 witnesses(with Passport, Tazkara& 2 passport-sized photos) is mandatory.
    • Marriage Certificate Application forms, filled out.
    • Pay the required fee.
  • by mail by completing and submitting an order form with the fee to Vital Statistics

EligibilityEdit

All marriages, civil or religious, performed outside of Afghanistan are considered valid under Afghan law. A legally issued marriage certificate is required as proof. Dual nationals may need to have their marriage certificates authenticated at the Afghan Embassy in the country they were married.

  • If you are the bride or groom named on the certificate, the certificate can be issued to you.
  • If you are a child of the bride or groom, the certificate can be issued to you if the bride and groom are deceased.
  • Please provide at least three (3) forms of your identification (either the bride or groom, not both).
  • If you are not the bride or groom named on the certificate or their child, you must satisfy one of the following conditions:
  • A letter of authority, giving permission to apply and at least three (3) forms of identification from the bride or groom named on the certificate, and your own identification.
  • Show Power of Attorney relating to the bride or groom named on the certificate.
  • Be a solicitor/welfare group acting for or in the interests of the bride or groom named on the certificate.

Marriage Certificate is valid up to the time the couple divorces officially.

After the marriage is registered, the court will issue a marriage certificate upon request.

Before a marriage certificate can be produced, your marriage must be registered. Your civil or religious marriage celebrant will register the marriage on your behalf.

The marriage must be registered in Afghanistan to order a marriage certificate.

A marriage certificate is different from a marriage license, which you get before you get married. It is also different from a Record of Solemnization of Marriage, which your officiant might give you after your marriage ceremony. The Record of Solemnization of Marriage is not a legal record of your marriage.

A marriage certificate is a record of a marriage. It lists the date and place of the marriage, and names of the people who were married.

A marriage certificate is a document containing the details of a marriage performed in Afghanistan. You can order a copy or multiple copies if the marriage is registered in Afghanistan. You can use this certificate to change your name, process a divorce, or as a record of family history.

The Afghan marriage certificate is a legal document in Afghanistan. If the couple needs to use it outside Afghanistan, it should be notarized at the Embassy or Consulate of the foreign country where the marriage certificate will be used.

The marriage certificate you received at the church � or any other place where you were married � isn't acceptable in court. You can get a copy of your marriage certificate or a certified copy of the registration of marriage from Vital Statistics (an office run by the provincial government.


Other uses of the Document/CertificateEdit

You can use a standard marriage certificate as proof of your wedding for official purposes, such as changing your name on a passport or driver license.

Afghan marriages in Afghanistan: For a marriage which took place in Afghanistan to be valid, the marriage must be registered with the Afghan court. Evidence of this should be by a court stamp on the Nikah Nama and an attestation from the MFA Afghanistan. Without this registration, the marriage certificate is not considered as valid.
