- To Get a Duplicate General Education Certificate (GEC), the applicant has to approach the South African Department of Basic Education link
- An application form will be provided to the applicant by the concerned officer.
- The applicant has to fill in all the necessary details in the application form. (Incomplete applications are not accepted)
- Make sure that the applicant has attached all the necessary documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
- The applicant has to attach photocopies of the required documents along with the application form while submitting it.
- The applicant has to pay the prescribed fee as requested by the authority. The fee details are mentioned in “Fees” section of this page.
- Submit the completed application to Chief Directorate: National Assessment and Public Examinations.
- After receiving the application, the concerned authority will check the submitted application and document set. If all are in place, the application will be accepted.
- All applications are processed within a reasonable time, having regard to the particular circumstances of each application, including the completeness of information and documents submitted to the authority by the applicant.
- The authority may seek additional information from an applicant if this is necessary to assess the application. The authority does not need to deal further with an application until the applicant has provided this additional information.
- This entire process can be completed within 30 – 45 days or as per the timeline advised by the respective department authority.
Required Documents
- Completed Application form
For lost or damaged certificates:
- An affidavit stating what happened to your certificate (i.e. if it is lost or damaged);
- The original national/ senior certificate (if it is damaged), this is not applicable if it is lost;
- A certified copy of your identity document (ID); and
- Proof of payment.
For combination of results:
- The applicant’s results from all examination sittings;
- A certified copy of the applicant’s Identity Document; and
- Proof of payment.

Fees
- Duly completed application form should be accompanied by cash or cheque for the amount of R153.00 (made out to the department of basic education).

- The validity of the certificate is forever.

Need for the Document
- A matric certificate, also known as a secondary school document, is a certificate of evidence given to pupils who have successfully completed their class 10th grade.
- If the applicant has lost or damaged his/her original matric certificate, or he/she wrote matric in more than one examination sitting and he/she want to combine his/her credits to qualify for a National Certificate, i.e. Senior Certificate (SC) or National Senior Certificate (NSC),he/she may apply for re issue or duplicate certificate.
